3 weeks done - over half way

I’ve just completed three weeks of treatment so now half way through - 15 sessions done out of 28.

No skin issues yet  but I’m bracing myself.

Bowel movements are incredibly painful and knock me out for a few hours afterwards. I asked for more pain relief today and have oramorph. I must take paracetamol regularly.

Otherwise side effects are annoying but manageable, nausea and tiredness mainly. I do have vup Al itching so they also provided cream for that - could be radiotherapy but also could be peri/menopause.

I hope this is useful for anyone about to start treatment - it’s a pain but doable.

Onto week 4 - the homeward stretch!

  • Hi AuroraHunter

It is nice to hear from you and so pleased you are not struggling too much. Good to hear that your skin is holding up as I remember you are using the Strata XRT and hope it delivers as promised.

You are on the home stretch now and the end is in sight. Really hoping for you that everything remains bearable and your bowel gives you some let up with the oramorph.

I am just behind you, starting on the 5 August, very similar situation. I'm only doing 23 days of radiotherapy but I'm not sure that the side effects are any less.

Best of luck going forward and thinking of you.

    Have a good weekend

I remember getting to 15 sessions done and like you, thinking I am over half-way!  And that home stretch does go quickly.  I am pleased your team are helping you keep on top of the pain and don't be afraid to ask for more if you need it.  We all remember the bowel movements...

Thank you for coming back and letting us know how you are and giving encouragement to those about to start.  We are all cheering you on!

  • This is so helpful, I start treatment on Monday. I’m so anxious about it that I’m dreaming about it all night!
I have thirty treatments and two infusions.  Any helpful tips?

best of luck as you hit the one stretch- I’m gonna blink and be there too!

  • Hi

Sounds like you are having the same chemo regime as I had. Do you have a picc line if so I bought a thing called a limbo sleeve it was brilliant for showering etc I even managed to get my pump in it. I also found mens baggy boxers and water wipes my essentials. The time will go quick once you start. Good luck for Monday. Sending hugs.  Xx

  • Hi  , it’s good to hear that you’re powering through those treatments but I’m sorry that you’re experiencing difficulties with going to the loo. I suffered constipation throughout & some days I literally felt that I’d pass out on the toilet! I cranked up the stool softeners which helped but there was still discomfort down to the skin reaction from the radiotherapy. On a positive note it’s good to hear that your skin is holding up, my reaction sounds very much like your own & started in the vulva area. Are you taking anti-nausea meds? If so maybe ask for a different one there’s so many different ones out there & yes I feel your pain with the fatigue, that was one of the most prevalent side effects for me & unlike general tiredness you just cannot power through fatigue can you? You’re on the homeward stretch now so keep on checking off those days & you’ll be at the end before you know it.

  • Hi Bungle1!

No I am on oral chemo twice daily for each of the 30 days of radiation. I had one IV infusion on my first day and I think in two weeks I'll have my second IV infusion.

Waterwipes were delivered yesterday, I got my sitz bath and all the lotions. My goodness, it's a full time job just trying to prevent some of extra awful things from happening.

I'm curious about what week three holds for me, just finished week two and despite some pain on one day, it was a much better week than week one!  I'm a third of the way through and excited that by next Friday I'll be half way done!

    1. Hi, new on here, so hoping I can pick up some useful advice. I am seeing my Consultant next week to get treatment plan. I know it's going to be 5 weeks Radiotherapy and chemo just not sure if the chemo plan yet. I am looking for some advice on the sitz baths as anticipating needing one. Just suffering bad aching at the moment, I have a rectal Squamous cell lesion very low, and liver Mets. So got a long trip I think, only diagnosed 12 days ago so still feeling.
  • Hi JDTB-

welcome and sorry we’re meeting under these circumstances.
I have ordered a site bath but not used it, a lot of people recommended it!
This group is great and has helped me know what and when to expect side effects!
    good luck!!!
