Anal skin tags

Just wondering if anyone developed anal skin tags prior to diagnosis? I have two and they still remain. I only finished treatment just over two weeks ago. When I asked the oncologist he said they wouldn’t think about them until well after all treatment was completed.
Has any got the same? Or has anyone who is in remission had them removed? They are very annoying when trying to wipe clean.
Thanks

  • Hello Heather09

I haven't but as far as I know skin tags are relatively easy to remove.  It could be that the oncologist is wary of doing anything right now whilst you are in the recovery phase and sore enough already.

I can understand how annoying they must be, I used Aldi baby lotion (which contains coconut oil) and as well as being very soothing it was effective at cleaning too.

But I hope you get it sorted out soon.

    Irene xx

  • Hello Heather,

As my treatment came to an end, I had this feeling of a bit of my bottom sticking out, and it was quite sore and very annoying. I spent ages in the shower shoving it back in, only for it to slowly make it's way out again. I mentioned to onc when I saw him and he sort of said the same as yours - they would not do anything until it had all settled down.

I am now three years on, and I still have what I think of as a biggish tag, but I can't feel it now apart from when I shower and I have come to accept it is just part of the damage to my bottom from the radiotherapy. I do have to be careful when wiping, and I use wipes if I am out, or a portable bidet (called a Happy Po, great little gadget) at home.

I would give things a bit of time to heal, but if it is still annoying you, definitely talk to onc about it. I'm just not up for any sort of op or procedure now, but you may feel differently. Good luck anyway xx

  • Thanks so much - I appreciate your reply and reassurance. I’m still using water wipes so I think I’ll keep up with them and I have my trusty Sitz bath for cleaning!

  • Hi have what I assume are piles from going to the toilet so frequently, they are so painful. I have cream from my GP but if anyone has any tips / creams that work I’d be very grateful!

  •  Hi Heather

I developed a lump the size of a pea aside my anus around 12 months post treatment if I remember correctly. It started small and gradually became hard and sore and of course more difficult to keep clean. I visited my oncologist who at first didn’t recognise what it was but asked permission to take a photo to take to the team and then I was booked in to have it surgically removed. The lump was diagnosed as a fibroepithelial polyp of anus which can develop due to trauma of the skin which obviously was the radiotherapy. It was a bit uncomfortable to have done therefore I think your skin probably needs to completely recover before any procedure is carried out. Three and a half years post treatment it has never returned.

  • Thanks for the tip Irene!

  • Thanks Julie

mine were there before treatment but have become more pronounced during treatment. I agree the whole area probably needs to settle down first before they will do anything.

  • Thanks - They might be piles - I’m guessing the oncologist will let me know on his next assessment. Thanks for your reply
