How did you manage once radiation is finished?

Hi, I survived my last week of chemo, it was hard and I still had side effects, nausea, cold sores, mouth ulcers and loss of taste even though it was reduced to 75%.  Also at the same time side effects from the radiation was increasing, blisters on blisters, skin peeling and I didn't know how I was going to get through.  Well today is my last day of radiation but I am in such a mess.  I am taking slow release morphine, short term morphine, reflux tablets, antiflam tablets, nausea tablets, tablets to avoid constipation, and am feeling sick most of the time.  My biggest issue now is trying to deal with the effects of radiation, I have read online here that others have suffered badly and I have taken on everything I could, sitz baths, gels, creams, stronger pain relief.  Help I need to know that its going to get better and not worse at this stage, does the burn continue to come out after radiation has finished or do you start healing?  I know everyone is different but I never thought everything would turn to blisters and skin peel from one end to the other.  I have also developed two skin tags, one below where you urinate (very painful with blisters) and another one around my anus.  I have read online from others that these have remained after the healing process. I am now looking at applying for some medicinal cannabis through the NHS, for pain relief.

  • I am just starting out on my journey. What you have been through and continuing to go through sounds absolutely awful. I am in awe of your staying power.

When I get to your stage in this process the most important thing I will do will be to plan something wonderful to look forward to.

If this might work for you too, maybe you could choose a time when you can feel certain that this awful time will be over. For me it will be a break away at the seaside, even if just for a long weekend, and getting up early for the sunrise.

I am sorry I can’t offer any insight into your experience or offer any advice, just know this, from reading your post, I think you are amazing.

  • Hello trying to be strong

You have had an extreme reaction the the chemo and what you have been through sounds absolutely awful but hopefully you will notice a rapid improvement in the nausea and mouth ulcers.

For most of us the side effects of radiotherapy continue for another couple of weeks and then there can be a remarkable turn-around in healing.  I am so sorry to confirm this to you, but the good thing to take is there are no more hospital visits, you can literally crash out at home and recover.  And if need be talk to your treating team about increasing the morphine dosage so see you through the next couple of weeks, I thought that morphine is stronger than medicinal cannabis but I am not an expert on cannabis.  Just remember to keep taking the stool softeners.

You have done so well in spite of the considerable problems you have encountered, hang on in there.  It will get better.  Sending strength and a gentle healing hug

  • Hi!
Irene is so right. You have had a very rough time of it but things will improve. I’m 3 weeks post treatment . It was tough the first 2 weeks after but then suddenly I felt much much better. I hope this happens to you- you definitely deserve it after all you’ve been through. I used instillagel before peeing to reduce the burning pain.
Thinking of you and feel free to post again. Rest and focus on the fact that the treatment has ended and you are on the road to recovery.
