Hi there I was diagnosed earlier this year with a locally advanced anal cancer staged at T4N1c with inguinal and iliac lymph nodesi had 6 weeks of radiotherapy .I am currently awaiting re staging scans can anyone tell me what happens next if the radiotherapy hasn't been successful thanks for reading xx

  • Hi Bellebabe welcome to the forum. I don't know enough about your particular type of Cancer but I feel sure that some of the lovely folks on here will be along soon to help out. I'm.imagining that several conversations will need to be had if the Radiotherapy hadn't worked to further develop plans for ongoing treatment. I'm.not sure whether chemo may come into the equation when lymph nodes are involved..Hope you manage to get some replies x

  • Hi  ,

If we haven’t spoken previously, welcome to the MacMillan Online Community although I’m really sorry to hear of everything you’ve already been through this year!

Will these be the first set of scans that you’ll have had since finishing your radiotherapy? Was it just radiotherapy that you had or chemoradiotherapy? The majority of us here have had chemoradiotherapy lots of us having successful results. Did your oncologist say that your radiotherapy was intended as curative treatment or were you expecting further treatment following this? Sorry if this seems like a lot of questions.

As  has said I don’t think anyone other than your treating team will have the answers you’re looking for. I completely sympathise with how stressful waiting for scans & results is, it’s awful, hopefully you’ll have an appointment very soon & fingers crossed it’ll be good news for you.

  • Hi nicola thanks for your reply to my question I was supposed to have chemo aswell bit my platelets dropped so they stopped it yes it will be my first set of scans I have an mri in January. Thanks for getting back to me xx

  • Hi Bellybabe

Welcome to the club. My oncologist told me not to worry to much about the 3 month scans as the treatment can still be working (not had mine yet) he said the 6 month scans are the important ones. I don't know for sure what happens if the treatment doesn't work, I vaguely remember someone telling me it would be surgery. But the treatment you have had is quite successful and the only people who can really tell you what's next would be your medical team. Try and think it's worked, the radiotherapy is the main part. Sending hugs. Xx

  • I’ve recently replied to another post regarding the chemotherapy side of this treatment regime, the radiotherapy is the mainstay of it & many people have had very successful results with radiotherapy alone, hopefully this will also be the case for you. It’s just so hard waiting on appointments & results especially in the early days.

  • Hello Bellybabe

I did reply to you earlier but I don't know what happened to it, I am sorry.  Another warm welcome to the forum and if you have visited before I hope you have found the posts helpful.

I am not a medical expert but what is common after treatment is that the first scans aren't clear as the radiotherapy goes on working for quite some months after treatment ends.  So it is good to be prepared for that and it doesn't mean that the treatment hasn't been successful, unfortunately it is all a waiting game and we are all aware of how nerve-wracking that is.

So I am keeping everything crossed that your results are clear.  Please let us know how you get on.

    Thinking of you, Bellybabe.

    Irene xx
