hi,
I'm really looking for some advise from some who may have been where we are at the moment - husband is 11 days post chemo for AML and his blood levels just aren't rising. Yesterday there was a glimmer but his N levels have gone from 0.01 on Sunday to 0.11 yesterday to just plan fat 0 today !! He is desperate to get home and is getting very down with it all now but they have said (rightly so) that until these levels come up its not worth the risk. Does this seem like an excessive time to have no improvement?
thanks for any advise at all !!

Hi again Fur baby mummy and sorry to read that your husbands counts are not coming up.
Blood recovery can be ever so different across everyone so no one size fits all. As long as he is in a ‘safe room’ he us in the best place but this period of time is not unusual.
Have his team bern trying G-CSF injections yet as these can help the ‘wake up’ the bone marrow?…,.. but clinical team prefer for the bonemarrow to repair itself with out intervention.
I was sent home 3 weeks after my second Stem Cell Transplant with my N count at 0.4-5 and was on G-CSF Injections daily for 4 months…… but there were a few bugs had got into the SCT unit and in my case I was safer at home.
I see you have posted your question to our Nurse steam so let’s see what they say. It’s a stressful time but this will sort itself out ((hugs))
Hi,
I was treated for AML almost 15 years ago. I had 4 rounds of chemo as I had no bone marrow match.
At the time I was told that you can either be a turtle or a hare in terms of blood counts coming back up, but neither made a difference to overall outcome. Turns out I was definitely a turtle! It was around 4 weeks after round 1, then around 5, 6, then 8 weeks after the last round. There were some scary moments with infections and side effects and hospital was definitely the best place to experience them. Short-term pain for long-term gain is how I saw it.
N levels of 0 are completely normal after treatment - it shows that everything has been knocked out, which is what you want.
I hope all goes well with your husband's treatment x
Hi
I was diagnosed with AML in May 2020 and after Chemo it was 3 months before my N levels for sufficient to have my Stem Cell Transplant in September 2020, I remember my Consultant telling me that the time taken for my N level to recover was the longest he had known, I also remember the Nurse giving me the daily N level and always being encouraging. Blood levels will go up and down as time goes by. My general blood counts are below what they should be but sufficient to be able to lead a normal life, I did have ITP and needed Steroids for 3 or 4 months in December 2021, and Shingles in April 2022, I think like many, I do have anxieties about this and that, and still wear a face mask when shopping or using public transport.
I guess I am just saying everyone is unique in their diagnosis and condition and therefore recovery will vary, but sharing experiences like in this forum I have found to be useful, if not sharing then reading about others experience can be helpful or even reassuring too.
Best Wishes
Phil
