Hi everyone.
My father was diagnosed with AML today (Friday) and goes in on Tuesday to start his Chemo.
It's been a whirlwind, everything has happened at lightning speed.
Can any one offer some sound advice please? What should we expect? What does he need? What should he take to hospital with him?
Thank you
Hi and a warm welcome to the Macmillan Online Community but sorry that you needed to find us and I am especially sorry to hear about your dad’s AML diagnosis. A blood cancer diagnosis does often come out of the blue like this and from living with my type of blood cancer for over 21 years it can be a long stressful journey at times but on the whole is very treatable.
Talking with other people who are on the same type of journey will help you navigate this rollercoaster and I am sure that some of the group members will be along to help.
Talking with others caring for family and friends will help a lot so do check out our Family and friends group as you will connect with others walking the same journey supporting family and friends through their cancer journey.
It’s always good to talk and the Macmillan Support Services provides lots of information, support, financial guidance or just a listening ear.
Most services are open 8am to 8pm, 7 days a week and it's free to call on 0808 808 00 00 have a look by Clicking here to see what is available and we also have our Ask an Expert section, but do allow two working days for replies from our expert team.

Hi Jurph
i was diagnosed April 2018 with Aml aged 61. I was quite ill so didn’t start chemo for three weeks, eventually had three courses of chemotherapy over the summer of that year.It was a tough few months ,the chemo knocks your immune system so expect him to have quite a few infections but the medical teams are prepared for this. Once his bone marrow recovers he will feel better and hopefully be in remission. They will then decide if he needs a bone marrow transplant but try not to think that far ahead take one day at a time. Depending on which hospital he is in they will send him home after each course of chemo to build up his strength. I was treated in Cardiff Feel free to message me if you like, in the meantime I hope all goes smoothly for your dad x
Thank you so much for your reply. It's reassuring to know what to expect so we're not blindsided.
We're in Kent. Unfortunately the hospital is 45 minutes away.
