Not in remission after first round of chemo

Hi all

Am new here - was dx with AML in November, 15 weeks pregnant at the time.

I went through induction chemo and it only brought blasts down to 20%, so considered a failure.

The baby has amazingly survived and thrived!

But I found the news that the first round didn’t work harder than initial diagnosis and have been completely depressed since hearing this. I need an SCT due to cytogenetics so they are preparing me for that - but first baby must be delivered, prematurely.

I wondered if anyone else’s first round failed, but then went on to work?

Trying to stay positive but it’s hard, between worrying about myself and the baby...

Thanks
Faith

    Hi Faith

Welcome to the AML club, which no one wants to join!

That's a real tough one, all the euphoria of discovering you're pregnant, only to be hit with news of the AML beast.

You will beat the Fecker as you know  that your baby is expecting you too.  You can't have a better goal than that to head towards! A positive mindset is really important, and taking things one day at a time.  If you join the AML group, you can see the other active chats, that will give you lots of shared experiences.

It's quite common not to go into remission after the first round of chemo, and the techniques for Stem Cell Transplants are improving all the time.  Do you have friends and family that can support you through this?  It's a tough old battle, but you will win through.

    Keep in touch.

    Love and hugs

Hi faith, so sorry to hear avout your diagnosis and especially being pregnant but you and your baby sound like real fighters, like rog said trying to stay strong mentally is so much a part of the battle so stay positive and believe you can and will beat this

There is so much support on here so if you ever need anything just ask, I didn' get full remission first time i have had round 2 and bone marrow next week so will keep you updated but try not to worry as a lot of people don't

Take care and keep us updated how your getting on, we are all in this together xxx

  • Thanks both, it’s been so tough lately but I am thankful that since the chemo i have remained stable, they are monitoring closely and letting the baby grow as much as possible...fingers crossed I get a few more weeks before it takes off again. Bloods are quite good and my neutrophils even started goin up after a month of 0.9 readings, they are now 1.3. Small victory perhaps but you guys know better than anyone how much the daily bloods can affect your overall outlook!

Good luck to you both - in remission and the transplant! X

I have aml I was diagnosed July 30 2020 I completed my first round of chemotherapy but unfortunately it did not work. I start a second stronger treatment tomorrow morning. I really hope this one works I’m only 24 years old and my baby is home with my mother. My son just turned 6 months. If I can have a conversation with you I would appreciate it.

  • Just wanted to reach out and and wish you best of luck,  I follow this group as I am frightened I may have AML I have geniune reasons for thinking that but as yet my blood stats are stable.  Do you mind me asking if you had any symptoms prior to getting diagnosed and if so for how long and what they might have been. I have been exposed to a lot of radiation and have Weakness, bone pain in hips/femurs and ribs and fever some nights? This has been going on for a couple of months now.   As I said all the best with your treatment. Al
