Sun protection after AML & SCT

Hi LISALISA73 and welcome to this corner of the Community although I am always sorry to see folks joining us. I am Mike and I help out around our various Blood Cancer groups. 

I don’t have AML but I was diagnosed back in 1999 with a rare, incurable type of NHL Stage 4a so although my Blood Cancer ‘type’ is different I understand the challenges of the journey well.

I have actually had two Allo (Donor) SCTs so know this even more so. We undo actually have a dedicated Stem cell transplant group where you will connect with others who have been in the SCT rollercoaster.

As for your question about skin protection…. Any good brand  factor 50 is a must summer and winter. Wide brim hats and the less skin that is visible the less chance of developing skin cancer as unfortunately the treatments used for both your AML and SCT open you up for this.

There are good ‘outdoor’ clothes that have UV protection….. I ware a lot of Craghooppers cloths as they are light and offer good protection.

Hello Lisa, I had SCT after AML back in 2014 and to be honest I stayed out of the sun.My haemotologist  said stay out of the sun and embrace the pale look.  I did buy a large hat and always wore sun glasses. I now use Clarins sun block and factor 50. Two years ago I had a Basal Cell Cancer on my eye but as this is very common in all people its difficult to say whether this was as a result of the treatment or just unlucky. Even 8 years later I stay out of the sun and or wear long sleeves and a hat. I got my hat from M&S can't remember how much it was. Good luck with your recovery.
