Hi guys,

I am new to the forum. I am 21 years of age and I first got diagnosed in Oct 2021 and went through 4 intense rounds of chemo and got the all clear in May 2022.

I recently found out I have relapsed and I am now needing a bone marrow transplant.

Just kind of looking for some support mentally as I am really low and I feel as though I have nowhere to go. I am really struggling to come to terms with it and be okay with the mental side of things!

Please could anyone give me tips for the bone marrow transplant or just how to keep myself okay mentally and how to deal with the feelings that I have?

Thank you in advance!

  • Hi  and a warm welcome to this corner of the Community although I am always sorry to see folks joining us. I am Mike and I help out around our various Blood Cancer groups.

I don’t have AML but I was diagnosed way back in 1999 with a rare, incurable but treatable type of NHL (Stage 4) having relapsed many times so although my Blood Cancer ‘type’ is different I do appreciate the challenges of this journey rather well…… and more so as I have had two Allo (donor) Stem Cell Transplants.

When Consultants talk about Bone Marrow Transplant they are actually talking about Stem Cell Transplant. It’s ends up with exactly the same result but just done a different way….. but consultants still tend to use he old term.

We do actually have a dedicated Stem cell transplant support group where folks from all the different types of blood cancers who are on or been on the Stem Cell Transplant journey support each other.

    Always around to help out

Actually, you should understand that you're not the only one having the same issue. Personally, I've gone through 2 cancers, and I have recovered both times. Once, my  Online mental health support specialists told me that people were afraid of uncertainty. So, no matter what's going on with your life, you always have the power to stay strong. Best wishes to you!!! "
