Hi everyone. I don't know what to do, so any help would be most appreciated. My husband is 42 and has metastatic kidney cancer. Prognosis not at all good. We have been invited to Las Vegas next month for a family wedding. It appears no insurance companies will touch as, and being the states, I don't see how we can go without any. On the same hand- we don't have long together and he wants to go regardless. It is only 4 days. I suppose our usual travel cover with Lloyds bank that we get with our bank account will be void now?

Any advice or thoughts on any companies or whether we should just go for it anyway would be so helpful, thank you in advance

  • Hi Katie and a warm welcome to the online community

That sounds like a great trip to visit Las Vegas for a family wedding! Unfortunately, as you've found, it can be more difficult to find travel insurance when you have a cancer diagnosis.

I don't know if you'd had chance to look through the member's stories thread yet, as it's where the majority of recommendations from other forum members are. If not, clicking on the link I've created will take you straight there.

It is best to phone the insurance companies rather than try and do online quotes as often at the end of the online quote it will tell you to phone the company and you'll then have to go through all the information again. Also sometimes the broker can refer to the underwriters to see if they would provide cover when an online quote might just give you a straight refusal.

Make sure you have all the information to hand about your husband's diagnosis and treatment before contacting the insurers. This is a list of things an insurance provider might want to know when you're applying for insurance. Some providers will ask for a letter from your husband's doctor that says he is well enough to travel. This could come from your cancer team or from your GP and it might save time if you get the letter before contacting insurance providers.

The travel insurance that comes with your bank account may not be void but you usually need to advise them of any change to your health. Check your policy to make sure.

Do come back and let us know how you get on
