Recommended Travel Insurance

Hi everyone

As it can be time consuming looking through existing posts for travel insurance recommendations I thought it'd be a good idea to try and keep all recommendations in one place.

With that in mind I thought I'd ask that when you've found an insurance company that provided you with cover at a reasonable cost you posted that recommendation here.

If you could put a little bit of additional information eg. whether you got single trip or annual, cover for a cruise, worldwide, etc along with anything else that you think others would find helpful when they are researching that would be great.

I'll keep 'bumping' this post so that it remains on the first page where new members will easily see it.

All the recommendations come from community members and are not recommendations from Macmillan. Please make sure you do your own research as to whether they are suitable for you.

Hi,

Really sorry but could send out the latest list of travel insurance companies.  I cant seem to find the list you sent me last month.

Thanks again. Jon

Hi /Jon

Unfortunately I am no longer allowed to provide a list of travel insurance companies for you to try, as this could be interpreted as a recommendation from Macmillan.

If you look at previous posts in the group you should be able to come up with a selection of companies to try that other forum members have successfully obtained insurance through.

When you do find something suitable it would be a big help if you could reply to this post letting us know which company you used so that others will know to try them in future.

Best wishes x

Morning

I assume you haven’t been allowed to do this. I’ve looked through a lot of your previous posts and the list has disappeared.

Can you confirm that’s the case or do I keep looking??

kind regards

Morning Christine

You've assumed rightly unfortunately!

No community champion is allowed to mention a travel insurance company as this could be deemed a recommendation from Macmillan who aren't authorised to recommend insurance. Therefore, all of the lists have been removed from any of my previous posts and that's the reason I'm hoping to encourage people to post their recommendations on this thread so that there'll just be one place new members have to look. However, I haven't had any takers yet

Best wishes

I used insurancewith.com for a Caribbean Cruise and found them very helpful and reasonable cost (£149)  considering I had not long finished Chemo and was still being monitored.

We have to remember everyone’s health needs are different and can be very complex so what works for one person may not for another

My husband has a rather long list of medical problems including chronic kidney disease, peripheral vascular problem, lung cancer, pancreatic cyst, psoriatic arthritis, essential hypertension, pre-diabetes, gord, total knee replacement and a couple of others - none of which are giving any problems now but Boots refused us whereas InsuranceWith did a single trip for one week to the Balearic Islands for £170.00.   I used to go with Eurotunnel but they have stopped doing the islands so had to spend nearly 2 hours on the phone going through everything but managed to get covered in the end.   Just hope I didn't forget anything!

Hurrah For Boots Online!

(posting here as requested)

A bit of background:

First diagnosis 2011 IDC in R. breast, mastectomy, removal of lymph nodes, chemo & radiotherapy. Given all clear in 2015

Second Round: 2015 discovered new cancer, left breast, metastatic in spine & hips. Given 3-month terminal diagnosis, palliative care with hormone therapy & bisphosphonate infusions. Dec 2105 nearly died through pneumonia & pulmonary embolism resulting in need for pluerodesis. 2018 still going!

Since then, been fairly stable, on a string of meds for pain, PE, blood thinning etc.

So, I'm not a good insurance risk!

Anyway, we decided to treat ourselves to a cruise this year. I can't fly (risk of lymphodoema), so booked a cruise from Southampton, down to Portugal and Spain. Thought we had insurance sorted with a specialist group called "bought by many". Just needed confirmation from my consultant that terminal prognosis was for more than 3 months. Fee would have been £384, single trip of 7 days. Got the confirmation, then went to pay for the insurance. Three pages later, they list the exclusions - No Sea Cruising!

Then, spent the last week calling/getting online quotes every travel insurance company we could find. Out of about 60 companies only got three to quote. The sticking point was usually because it was a sea cruise. I guess it's just too expensive to evacuate someone from the middle of the ocean in an emergency.

First quote: GoodToGo - £3,200. Later reduced to £2,700

Second quote: Free Spirit - £1,400 (Lovely guy called Rob, who was ever so helpful)

Third Quote: Boots Online - £297. Yes, that's UNDER THREE HUNDRED POUNDS!

After applying online, I get a screen telling me to ring in to give more details. That's the point at which they usually say "No Quote", so I wasn't hopeful. However, a lovely agent called Joanne took the call, went through the details and told us I scored -4, which required confirmation from the underwriters. She also told us (the only company to explain why) that the low score was "mainly due to the daily use of morphine". She explained that the underwriters normally take 7-10 days to give an answer and, as we are due to go in only 5, she wouldn't be able to help. We explained how many we'd tried and she promised to give it a go.

Just an hour later, one of their medical specialists called back, a great lady called Miriam, and took more details. after 15 minutes she agreed they would be able to quote but didn't know herself how much it would be, but we'd get an email later in the day.

That email has just arrived, with a quote for just shy of £300. I couldn't believe it! Ive checked and double-checked. All my conditions are listed and marked as "accepted", there doesn't seem to be any exclusion at all!

I'm ever so grateful to Joanne and Miriam, they really pulled the stops out - I was at the point of having to cancel my cruise (and loose the money), but they've come through as absolute diamonds!

If anyone else is having problems sourcing holiday insurance, give Boots Online a try. I think they're marvellous!

Well sadly you guys all had better luck than me..

Good to go insurance wanted £1839.49

Staysure wouldn't insure me.

Eurotunnel would for £8 For the day but nothing at all to do with my cancer..

Insure cancer.com said wouldn't insure me a few weeks before I travel and I need to call back nearer the date...

I  am currently undergoing chemotherapy...

Needless to say the trip is now not going to happen.

Hi

I'm very surprised that Eurotunnel wouldn't insure you. I understood that they normally only decline to insure if you are terminal and I didn't think you were as you said you are currently undergoing chemotherapy.

They would.   Just nothing to do with my cancer..

But why wouldn't they cover your cancer ? They do, or did, cover all cancer unless you were classed as terminal.

You might be interested in this thread about their cover.
