Hi Everyone

i wanted to share my experience of buying travel insurance for a trip to Italy for a family wedding.  My husband has Metastatic Prostate Cancer and is having end of life care.  He is remarkably well, currently, so we decided to attend the wedding.  I left the purchase of insurance until the week before travel to be sure that he would be well enough.  I tried All Clear first and their lowest quote was £1458.00 this excluded cancellation cover and baggage cover and was just for my husband.  I then tried several other companies from the recommendations list.  Most would not quote.  My last try before paying All Clear was InsuranceWith. Getting the quote was tortuous.  I was on the call for 1 hour 45 minutes to then be told that I would have to have a consultation with a medical expert.  The slots available for this second consultation were on our travel date.  I asked to speak to a team leader as I didn’t want to give up after spending all that time on the screening call.  I gave the supervisor some idea of my frustration and asked him to please try to arrange the second consultation before 4pm next day otherwise I would buy elsewhere.  I did get a call back the following morning along with a quote of £250.00 to cover us both!  The excesses were higher than All Clear but having combed through the small print I am more than happy with the excellent cover offered by Insurancewith.

On another matter, it was suggested by our palliative care team to read Travelling Abroad on the following website - hospice.uk.org   Fortunately I did and discovered that taking Controlled Medications into Italy requires an official certificate to be signed by the prescribing doctor.  I emailed the Italian Embassy who emailed the form to me and I was able to get the doctors signature.  I assume that these medications would have been taken off us at border control.

i hope this message helps further travellers and emphasise the need to take out insurance cover for international travel.

I'm glad you got sorted with travel insurance. I have always used Insurancewith and find them very reasonable. For the first time I took out an annual policy last December as I had a few trips planned, things have changed in than last eight months notably my medication and scan results. I contacted them last week and yes did need a call back from a medical expert but he was very helpful and it resulted in an extra payment of £20 ! My original annual policy cost just under £400. For information I have suggested 4 colon cancer with metastases to lungs and liver and am on palliative care.

For anyone wanting travel insurance do try them, I think people have problems when trying to go on a cruise or to USA but it's no wonder just think about the costs involved if you had to be airlifted from a ship in the middle of the ocean !

I hope you have a great trip to Italy and enjoy the wedding, my trip is to my son's wedding in Cyprus in two weeks time.

  • I was keenly interested to see that you got travel insurance for your husband with a huge saving.  On looking at Insurancewith's website their parent company is tifgroup which is regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority, so I searched google for 'FCA tifgroup' and was alarmed to see that this company has been severely sanctioned by the regulator for non payment of claims!
