Travel insurance with a colostomy

Hi, we are looking to travel to the canaries in March next year. I had bowel cancer and completed treatment in December 2024 (this consisted of radiotherapy, chemo then an operation to remove any remaining cells which has resulted in a permanent stoma). I've started to look at travel insurance but it's a bit unclear what details I have to declare. I got a quote from Staysure after declaring the bowel cancer but is the stoma a separate 'condition'?  I will probably phone around in the end but I just wanted to check if anyone else with a stoma had experience of this. Might post in the stoma group too

  • Hi

I had insurance in place already when I first went abroad after cancer treatment-in fact I had to make a claim as my cancer was diagnosed on the day I was due to travel long haul. After that, I updated my insurer by phone every time I wanted to travel.

I wasn’t able to get cover for my cancer with my company until 6 months had elapsed from a clear scan but I did still keep my insurance with them. I later had surgery which left me with 2 stomas, so advised of this. I’ve subsequently had some other health issues, so also advised them of these prior to travel.

It’s a bit different to your situation where you are looking for new insurance, but my point would be that you should tell them everything so they can make the right decision on your premium etc.  I’ve found it easier to phone them up to go through everything as I prefer speaking to a person to make sure nothing is missed.

I hope you can find something suitable and get to enjoy a lovely holiday. If you have any questions about travelling with a stoma, we have lots of tips in the stoma forum if you want to ask any questions there.
