Travel insurance post lung surgery

Hi

I am having a frustrating time trying to get travel insurance for myself, as it seems a lot of people do!

I was diagnosed with tonsil cancer in October 2017 which was successfully treated but unfortunately then spread to my lung. I had surgery on 9th September 2019 to move my lower left lobe of my lung. This meant my holiday (to Disney with the family - our treat after the tonsil cancer) in mid October would have to be cancelled (although this post does not relate to that).

I have moved the holiday to Xmas but because I'm still within 6-12 weeks since the op nobody will ensure for this rearranged holiday, BIBA wont do anything until I am classed as fit to travel.

Am I simply going to have to wait  until the 12 weeks is up to get insurance - which is the week before the trip is planned? Has anyone else experienced this?

    I'm really sorry to hear what a frustrating time you're having looking for travel insurance. Unfortunately, as you have found, it can be more difficult to find reasonably priced travel insurance when you have a cancer diagnosis. 

    I don't know whether you've looked through the Recommended Travel Insurance thread yet as it's where the majority of recommendations from other forum members are. Clicking on the link I've created will take you directly to it if you haven't seen it and you may find some specialist insurers there that you haven't tried.

    I have tried online for most of the recommended ones in your list and I phoned Boots & Holidaysafe, they both said its because I had the op within the last 12 weeks I would not get insured.

    I assume thats why the ones I did online rejected.

    I don't want to be ringing around everyone if I know the answer is always going to be the same.

  • I agree that it is very frustrating and time consuming to have to phone the various companies especially if they all end up declining you because of the time frame.

    The problem with doing quotes online is that you don't usually know why you've been declined and you don't have the opportunity to explain your circumstances. Most people who've obtained insurance within this group say that it's best to phone, rather than do online quotes, as sometimes you'll be put through to the underwriters who may then agree to provide insurance.
