My dad is now receiving support via the palliative care team, and we found out today he has weeks to live. I’m scared to go to sleep, because I don’t want to wake up and have to remember everything all over again. I’ve never experienced emotional pain like this

  • Hi Animallover64

I am really sorry to hear that Dad has cancer and that he is now going through palliative care.

I can understand that it is a really difficult time and I can understand that you are worried about going to sleep and waking up to the reality of what is happening all over again.

Are you having support yourself from the palliative team? It may be worth talking with them and see what support they can offer you as a family. If Dad has a cancer nurse specialist you could also speak to them.

It may also be an idea to contact your GP to talk about any support that you may need yourself.

We do have the Support Line available from 8am to 8pm everyday, here at Macmillan so why not give them a call and chat about how you are feeling.

It is many years since we went through something similar in my own family and I remember that the only things that helped were to go with the flow with our feelings and to talk to each other. Routines helped where they could be followed- so things like school runs, shopping, meal times etc and also getting out and about for walks in the fresh air.

I am really sorry that you are going through such a difficult time and I hope that you are able to spend some time together. If you need anything please do ask.

    Jane
