Fast breathing rather than slow breathing in last few days?

Hi,

My Dad is in the active dying stage. Food and water was stopped two days ago and it is now mouth care only. He is not conscious really apart from groaning and has been in a deep sleep for two days now. My question is for the last week he generally had periods where he almost seemed to stop breathing for 30 seconds or so, which I know is normal. However today his breathing seems continually fast at about 24 breaths per minute without any gaps. Is that normal. His mouth is open most of the time while he does this.

My younger sibling has managed to be here for the weekend but is due to return to her disabled child on Sunday night. Is it possible he is still going to pass soon or is it only when breathes slow down that he will?

  • Hi. This is such a tough time for you and its hard to witness. I was told when my husband was at this stage it would last a day or two at most, for him it was about 8 hours. Im not a medic though, but I wish you peace as you face this with your dad, and hope you have your sibling for company. Do you have other family.?
