At a loss. Sister terminal in hospice, closed off and hostile. How can I fix this?

Hi,

Hard to know where to start, I’ll try and keep it short.

My sister is in hospice with 4b cervical cancer, it’s terminal and there’s no more treatment options. Pain management is the hardest. Seems like 6 months might be a stretch.

She’s pulling away from family, refusing to talk/reply, blocking, very angry, and making unreasonable demands which can’t be met. Had issues in the past (lies, etc) but all trying to rally round to support and be there best we can regardless. Trying to accept she can’t be forced, but hoping she will come around and want us to be there before it’s too late. This is awful and heart wrenching.

Hard to grieve and process it all when it feels “stuck”. Not sure what else can be done. Hate this situation and the extra high-pressure stress it’s causing for all, to the point of family members getting emotionally drained and sick.

Advice would be welcome. Don’t know where to turn for support and I fear that we won’t get a calm/peaceful ending… feel I’m at a loss and want to fix it, even though I know I’ve tried and done my best.

Thank you for listening.

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

I’m Anne, one of the Community Champions here on the Online Community and, although I'm not a member of this group, I noticed that your post hadn't had any replies yet. Responding to you will 'bump' it back to the top of the discussion list again.

It sounds like a very difficult situation that you and your family find yourself in and I don't have any experience to share as I was the one with cancer. You might find that chatting things through with someone on the Macmillan Support Line helpful. They're available on 0808 808 0000 7 days a week from 8am to 8pm.

I hope you're able to find a way forward.
