how to be there for others

My grandmother was diagnosed with breast cancer last month, and since then the doctors have discovered that it has spread to her bones and her lymph nodes. She likely only has around a year left to live with treatment. We were never very close with one another like some people are with their grandparents, which is something I am feeling guilty about, but I mainly just don't know how to help my dad with this news. It seems like he hasn't fully processed it yet or he is just keeping a brave face. I've been crying about the news at least once a week and I went sober for october to raise money but I just don't know what to do to help him or the rest of my family while I feel like I have no control over anything
