My wife has stage 4 breast cancer that has spread to her liver and abdomen.
Just after Christmas she caught flu which became pheumonia and suffered a reporitory arrest in hospital.
She was on a respiratory unconscious in ICU for a week and thankfully has recovered but not fully. At the time I just got on with everything and seamed fine but I am now struggling with what happened with flash backs and anxiety. I don't know how or where to get support.
Hi Bigmac, I wanted to let you know understand how you’re feeling. My husband had a couple of extended hospital stays last year, one for pneumonia & sepsis, another for a kidney infection. He was seriously ill both times & it was a very worrying time. It was only when he was back home & recovering that I realised I was suffering from anxiety (I didn’t even know what it was until I talked to a family member who suffers from anxiety). I think now it was mild post-traumatic stress. I had several sessions with a psychologist from a local cancer charity (I live in Spain) which helped, then paid for some private sessions with a psychologist. It really helped me - just to talk through the experiences from my perspective and work out what was happening to me. I now know there is some professional help should I need it again and feel like I have a better understanding of my responses to the situation. Do try and get some support as it can be hard to function well if you’re suffering from stress and anxiety. I wish you well.
Whatever cancer throws your way, we’re right there with you.
We’re here to provide physical, financial and emotional support.
