Hi, I posted this in the New to the Community forum - and was re-directed to here!

2 months ago my mum (86) was living independently in her own home. Following a hospital admission after a fall due to a urine infection she was diagnosed with tumours in her spine, lung, adrenal glands and femur - untreatable. She was moved to a nursing home (which I chose from 3 options given to me) on the NHS continuing healthcare fast track system - but she didn't like it from the start. Following a cough problem after a chest infection she was taken back into hospital just over 2 weeks ago where she remains (where both of us caught covid). Throughout all of this I have received incredibly little support or information. I know that mum will not want to return to the same home - but I have no idea whether a move will be possible.I don't seem to be able to get support or advice from anyone, or even information about mum's palliative care. Any ideas?

  • Hi

Sorry to hear about what you have been going through, it does quite often happen that cancer is found a bit out of the blue and that can be a real shock to everyone involved.

In terms of issues around care homes I wonder if this is a question that someone on the helpline might be able to help with, if you ring 0808 808 0000 between 8am and 8pm they might be able to help.

For information about your mums palative care - does she have a specialist nurse, they would likely be in the best position to be able to help you.

Hope the covid was not too bad, there is I know something of a wave at the moment but feeling unwell yourself and trying to care is never easy.

    <<hugs>>

  • Thanks for taking the time to reply. Have now managed to speak to Palliative care doctor (after having a bit of a strop!) We will address the nursing home issue when (if?) they decide she is medically fit for discharge.
