Hi, my gran was diagnosed with lung cancer in nov and was told no treatment as she is too weak. We’ve been told it’s very aggressive and in two weeks it had spread from one lung to the other.
We haven’t been given any more info as to what to expect now. In the last week alone she has barely been eating she very rarely gets out of her chair and she has a really dry mouth her ankles have also swollen. We’re doing everything we can to try and help with this and are doing what the nurses suggest but we don’t have any idea what stage we are at. I don’t want to ask the nurses in front of my granny because she is scared and I don’t want to upset her. I think she knows she probably hasn’t got long but wouldn’t want to hear it. The oncologist didn’t give a time frame as they said it was hard to say.
no one has said to us what will happen just that she will gradually get more ill but are all these symptoms signs that Eol is not too far away? It’s so strange because she is so with it when she is awake
Hi Outlook2022
Sorry to hear about your gran and the impact her cancer is having on your family. The simple truth is that nobody really knows the answer to the questions because experience has shown that any time frame is at best an educated guess. I am sure having her family around and the support of the nurses means that she will feel loved. If you manage to share the fantastic memories you have of her it may help to make this time easier.
There is a set of pages on end of life on the main site, while focused more on the patient some of the information there might be helpful.
<<hugs>>
Steve
Thanks very much we will just have to try and enjoy the time she has left x
Hi I feel the same with my mum, she's 73 and diagnosed summer 2020, it is in her brain now since summer 2022. Doing well until 2 weeks ago and is now living with me to care for her.
Did you get anymore help or support?
I'm hoping to speak to my local macmillan Monday 9th Jan as they've been closed for 2 weeks
Hello, we spoke to Macmillan and they told us to speak to district nurse. We did on Boxing Day they did an emergency fast track care assessment and put it through as urgent but we still don’t have any carers. God knows how long you would wait if it wasn’t urgent! Macmillan nurse rang today and introduced herself as her personal nurse and said she would visit next week. All just lots of waiting! X
Thank you for your reply that's very helpful. Yes I'm concerned about that. My concern is she won't be able to go toilet soon and will be bed bound and I'm hoping I've some help by then. Let me know how you get on xx
Whatever cancer throws your way, we’re right there with you.
