Hello

My husband has been diagnosed with incurable inoperable Hypopharyngeal cancer .

He is getting palliative chemo at the moment and will start his 4th round in a couple days .

His chemo  is for 5 days and has been traumatic and exhausting for him .

His swallowing seemed to improve but just recently he is finding it difficult to swallow anything liquid or food leading him to believe chemo not working .

I really don’t know how to help him mentally he is falling apart it’s awful to see someone normally so strong and in control to be like this .

  • Hello

I am sorry to hear your husbands news, and wishing the very best for your family.

If it helps my father had throat cancer, which also presented him with severe swelling and pain. He also found his throat felt worse before it felt better with the chemo.

We did though have to keep a closed eye and constant review of his pain levels and medication and sometimes even sought second opinions, which in my dads case did result in med changes from time to time, Macmillan nurses where a great help when i was feeling overwhelmed and questioning his care plans, 0808 808 0000.

Wishing you the very best and hope this group can help.

  • Hi I’m so sorry to hear about your husband. My husband was diagnosed with the  same cancer 1 year ago. He’s had 6 sessions of radiotherapy & was to have chemo as well but he only had one session when he nearly went into kidney failure. We’re still going through it…he’s had Pet Ultrasound MRI Ct scans since treatment. He is now has to have another Ultrasound with biopsies because there is still activity & they are concerned that there could be necrosis on a ligament in his Larynx but it could also be cancer there is activity in his lymph nodes although he has had a lymph node removal can they operate again in that area? Have they removed your husband’s larynx? This has been mentioned that this maybe the only option for my husband if these results come back positive! Have they not put a peg into your husband’s stomach so that he can feed & drink? My husband had a peg fitted when he was going through treatment. Our life is a roller coaster of emotions I know how you feel the only thing we can do is support them & to be positive just be brave thinking of you both.
