Hi everyone, 10 weeks ago I took my grandad who is 63 to a&e. He was working as a delivery driver over 40 hours a week but was more tired than usual. Nan had also suspected he had not been eating as he kept making excuses but he told nan he was on a diet. He finally admitted he had felt un well for a long time and was feeling very sick and had back pain. So I took him to the hospital and he was diagnosed with oesophagus cancer which has spread to his lungs, liver, kidneys, stomach and lymph nodes.  They said they could offer him chemo but no surgery. He said whats the point when he has so much of it so he is now at home under the care of the district nurses and hospice at home team. He is deteriorating rapidly. The weight is dropping off him as he is no longer eating the last 3 weeks. He had 2 weeks of very bad sickness which we have now got under control with the help of a syringe driver. But now he has had chronic hiccups for the last 6 days. GP keeps subscribing stuff but nothing is working. Waiting for something else to come into the pharmacy in 2 days time. Does anyone else have any experience of getting rid of the hiccups?

I don't even know how long he has left, no-one has ever told us. He is still going downstairs. He isn't bed bound. Yesterday he looked very jaundice (skin and eyes).

I feel like the last 2 months has been a constant battle with gp's, nurses, pharmacists just to keep my grandad comfortable.

He is suffering right now and I just don't know what to do anymore.

  • Hi and a warm welcome to the online community

It must be incredibly hard for you all to have discovered that your grandad has cancer, especially as he has decided not to have treatment.

I'm hoping that since you posted this, the new medication has stopped your grandad's hiccups. If not then he, or your nan, should speak to his GP again.

Another avenue for you to try if he's still got hiccups is to join the oesophagus cancer group and ask the members there if they have suffered with hiccups and what they did to get rid of them.To join just click on the link I've created and then choose 'join this group' on the page that opens.

When you have a minute it would be really useful if could pop something about your grandad's journey so far into your profile as it helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar diagnosis. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Edit Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
