my dad has renal cancer spread to his spine. He’s now paralysed. Been in hospital now 7 weeks since paralysis hit. Radiotherapy has had no impact and we’ve been told he won’t walk again. In the last 4 weeks, he’s also had MRSA, shingles and now terrible fluid all over, which has gone to his chest so he’s on oxygen. He’s not been on chemo for 10 weeks. After being really ill with a chest infection this weekend, he and mum were just wanting him home for however long that may be, and there is a hoist and hospital bed ready as the social worker and physio set about the care package. However, in a terrible blow yesterday, the doctor and SW told him he won’t be able to go home as he’s too infirm..the hoist can’t be used as his skin would break giving infection as he has so little immunity, and it takes at least 3 people to even turn him. They said his only hope is a care home. Can this be so? Are there really such care homes? Or are they just not stating the obvious..that he’s in final days? I don’t understand why they haven’t suggested a nearby hospice he’s previously been in. I’m going to him today as 200 miles away so wasn’t there to ask the doctor / SW unfortunately, and I’m not sure if my mum is accepting this could be it, as she definitely now thinks they’ll be searching for a care home...
