Steroids

Hi

My mum has stage 4 incurable lung cancer with metastasis to her bones, lymph and renal gland. At the end of March went to the doctor for a suspected viral infection and we left with directions to go for an X-ray and blood tears as they suspected cancer. Over a month of tests after we were told the diagnosis and she has months rather than years left to live. A metal rod was put in her leg in April and she was in hospital for 10 days during which time she steadily declined. She was sleeping a lot of the time and eating and drinking very little. She went into a hospice and has been there ever since although plans are afoot to discharge her gone as she has been significantly rehabilitated at the wonderful place.

A few few weeks ago she was put on steroids which have strengthened her and she’s doing quite well. They’re now tapering the dose down on the basis you shouldn’t be on them too long. She’s deteriorating again.

I have a relative  who has been on steroids for years so I’m not sure why they have to be reduced. Has anyone got experience of this?

Thanks in advance.

Hi there sorry to hear your news lung cancer is just awful. My dad was diagnosed with small cell lung cancer stage 4 back in December, it had spread to his bones. He too had a metal rod put in his leg cus it was weak. After the op he just started to go down hill not drinking, not eating, getting headaches and confused. He had 6 lots of chemo and radiotherapy to his spine and lung. Unfortunately he lost his battle Monday 6 months after diagnosis. All I can say is stay positive and enjoy your time with her. Everyone is different and reacts different. My dad had steriods but they didn't help him at all really. But try to stay positive

    Best wishes
