Hello,

my mother was diagnosed with ALL in June 2023. Since then she had lots of chemo and eventually managed to clear the cancerous cells. She then had a stem cell transplant in November 2023 and this was successful at first but in January 2024 we were told that she needs to have another dose of the stem cells as the engraftment was not fully successful. 2 months after she developed GVHD of the skin, eyes and liver. Her liver was mostly affected and as a result she started ECP treatment. This was going well and her liver enzymes were slowly going down, however, in the meantime, she caught the flu, pneumonia and sepsis and she ended up in ICU in June this year. She’s still in ICU at the moment but is showing signs of improvement in that she’s awake now and has a tracheostomy oxygen mask which she has for most of the day. She’s also able to talk through the speaking valve. The doctors have told us that the infection in the lungs is still active and is of the same size it was at the start when she was intubated… which i struggle to understand because she is able to pretty much breathe on her own without the help of the ventilator and is also able to speak. The doctors have said that her immune system is weak and this is mainly why the infection is not clearing up. Has anyone experienced or know of anyone who has been in a situation like this?
many thanks

  • I just put up a reply to your other post as it is basically the same as this one.

  • Just thought I’d reply to this thread, even at this late stage. Daughter had so much treatment (it’s in my profile) and ended up having an allo SCT in 2011.

She’s continued having immune problems ever since which has resulted in pretty rubbish winters (too many needs for antibiotics) so they are running some tests prior to her seeing a haematologist in February. Lung function test yesterday showed that her lungs are still improving (prior to her allo they tested at 102%) but of course she’s a freelance busy trombonist! She was concerned about her ferritin levels which have suddenly gone up again after being at a reasonably steady level. She had need of a large number of transfusions post allo as her blood type was ultra-slow to change to her donors. She didn’t tolerate the only med that helped this so had regular ‘bleeding’ sessions for a couple of years.

Anyway, Happy New Year to all….-and good health too.
