I am approaching my 100days SCT and thinking about all the vaccinations that I have to come. I'm told I will be given COVID and flu within the next few weeks and then a host of baby ones in November. I would be interested to know how others have got on with vaccinations and if there have been any side effects. I am wanting to start travelling ( UK) soon but I'm wondering if I should wait untill I've had my baby jabs first or should I just go for it and be careful. Now that I am recovering and feeling well I need some fun and excitement to look forward too.
In theory, but this was given to me 7 years ago.
The following applies to donor transplant recipients. ?i am 8 years post Haploidentical transplant, in which I received my son's hyper-vigilant immune system. Good and bad there. No evidence of either T-Cell Lymphoma and it took two full years to eradicate the Myelodysplastic Syndrome. The cost has been in extensive food and medication allergies. It has taken two clinical trials and seven regimens total to control the GvHD. Due to heavy immune suppression, I have just now received tetanus/diptheria and Prevnar 20 pneumonia vaccines. I experienced an immediate uptick in my chronic GvHD. Pruritis which had been under control, returned and was quite bothersome. Sclerosis in my lower left leg and ankle worsened rather ominously, and my haematologist was duly concerned.
If you have GvHD,please consider asking doctor about spacing the vaccinations out, as once the transplanted immune system is triggered, the results can be completely unpredictable.
Hi Mike
Thought I would update you, after consulting with my wife's SCT team in London, my wife had her first dose of the MMR vaccine 4 weeks ago, a second dose will be given in April 24.
It was a little worrying I have to say, but she has had no reaction and no side effect whatsoever. I think it maybe that as she has been incredibly fortunate not to have been seriously affected post transplant with no Gvhd at all, and bloods continuing to be good which has contributed to this.
Good to hear this and that she had no issues.
I keep asking at my yearly Late Effects phone call but still getting a no ….. but I had some bad GvHD.
