My partner has just been diagnosed lymphoma and works as a chef, from what I've read his employer can fire him by fair dismissal, how is he supposed to cover bills before any benefits kick in?
Hi Henny90 and warm welcome to the Macmillan Community although sorry hear about the challenges you and your partner is having
I am Mike and I help out around our Lymphoma groups.
As your partner has been diagnosed with cancer (Lymphoma) your partner is covered by the Disability Act so he needs to get advice as to what he needs to do with regards to his Employer and the way forward.
It’s the weekend so not all services are available…..
But do call the Macmillan Support Line is open between 8am-8pm (timings may differ across services) 7 days a week on 0808 808 00 00…… this service provides cancer information, practical information, emotional support, benefits/financial/work guidance or just a listening ear.
We also have our Ask an Expert section but do allow 3 working days for a reply.
Talking to people ‘face to face’ can be very helpful so do check to see if you have any Local Macmillan Support in your area, do also check for a local Maggie's Centre as these folks are amazing.
You could also look for a local CAB office https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk
As for his lymphoma journey…. and for some context I was diagnosed way back in 1999 at 43 with a rare (8 in a million) incurable but treatable type of Cutaneous T-Cell NHL (a type of slow growing Low-grade non-Hodgkin lymphoma) ……. eventually reaching Stage 4a in late 2013 when a second, also rare (4 in a million) type of aggressive Peripheral T-Cell NHL (a type of fast growing High-grade non-Hodgkin lymphoma) was then presenting so although my Lymphoma ‘type’ my be different I most definitely appreciate the challenges of this journey rather well.
There are over 60 types and sub-types of Lymphoma so we can’t have a group for every type but these are our main Lymphoma groups below.
General Non Hodgkin's Lymphoma
These groups are safe places to talk to others with a similar diagnosis, treatment experience, to ask questions and get support from people who have walked or are walking the same journey.
Always around to chat ((hugs))
Whatever cancer throws your way, we’re right there with you.
We’re here to provide physical, financial and emotional support.
