Hi,

In 1995 I lost my mum to breast cancer...she was 55. In 2021 I lost my dad to lung cancer....he was 85 and smoked all his life. In 2023 I lost my brother to a brain tumour. Then my other brother got prostate cancer....fortunately he is still with us and had his prostate removed but its early days. 3 weeks ago lost my sister to pancreatic cancer.

Which leaves just me...I am 58 and I don't drink or smoke but I am so worried. Everyday I wonder if it's my turn. None of my family were unhealthy or overweight or had any other health issues.

I since found out that prostate cancer, breast cancer and pancreatic cancer are linked. Anyway after talking to my doctor he agreed that it's strange that every family member has been affected and has referred me to Southampton hospital to have genetic tests.

Although the waiting list is very long. I will probably be dead by the time I hear anything.

What should I look out for in the meantime?

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the Macmillan Community but I am so sorry to hear about the challenges your family have had over the years….. and I can understand your concerns.

We have no history of cancer running in my family….. but I am over 26 years into my cancer journey with two very rare, hard to treat types of Non Hodgkin’s Lymphomas (one incurable), Asbestosis and Prostate Cancer…. from my prospective I rolled the dice and did not win….. or did I?…… as I am now 10 years 8 months out from my last treatments, turned 70 back in Nov and still living a great life.

The Community is actually divided into dedicated Cancer Support Groups (Discussion Rooms).

This link Cancer Specific Groups is where you will find all our dedicated cancer support groups listed.

These groups are safe places to talk to others who may have a similar journey….. diagnosis, treatment experience, to ask questions and get support from members who are navigating the exact same journey.

As always the Macmillan Support Line is open between 8am-8pm (timings may differ across services) 7 days a week on 0808 808 00 00…… this service provides cancer information, practical information, emotional support, benefits and financial guidance or just a listening ear.

Talking to people ‘face to face’ can be very helpful so do check to see if you have any Local Support in your area, do also check for a local Maggie's Centre as these folks are amazing.

Do get back to me if you need further help navigating the community….. but all the best.
