Hello,
Unfortunately first time here sadly. After a short spell in hospital after some internal bleeding and tests the 'C' word was mentioned. We had been told possible 'ulcer' but further tests have confirmed Stomach Cancer with some cancer also found in the lungs and Liver and this is to my mum.
I knew we were going to be in trouble as we waiting in the corridor to see the consultant when i spotted a 'specialist nurse' going in before us. Of course by then i already thought that if it was going to bad news and that the doctor would need 'support' to talk as thought what happens next although after the words ' there will be 'no surgery' i didn't really remember much else of the conversation so really i'm not sure what 'Stage' she is at.
So no surgery and being referred to Oncology for cancer treatment or whatever happens next. 50mmx 50mm tumour in her 'fundus' in her stomach. How do we not know about this before? i think that is the hardest thing trying to work out where on earth it came from.
I did also hear mention the word 'palliative care' which something so far i have kept to myself, i guess we'll know more at the next stage following the next appointment.
I never thought in a million years that i would posting this here, on a cancer charity Forum page. My mum has cancer and this is the way she is going to die. 75 to me is still far to young.
Anyway, just wanted to post here. I've had my moment of sadness and now i feel like i have to be strong for my mum, my brother, who has also other things going on in his life and has completely gone to pieces and my poor old sister who isn't really good at anything practical.
Hopefully here i will get the support and help i think in the future.
Thanks, Fiona.
Hi Fiona Fionageeand a warm welcome to the Macmillan Community but I am sorry to hear about your mum’s diagnosis.
I know from experience having been on my cancer journey for over 26 years with two very rare, hard to treat types of Non Hodgkin’s Lymphomas (one incurable), Asbestosis and Prostate Cancer that navigating this journey can be such a stressful and challenging time but talking with and getting support from people who have walked or are walking the ‘exact same' journey can help a lot.
The Community is actually divided into dedicated Support Groups (Discussion Rooms) so can I recommend you look to join and post in our dedicated…….
……. support group.
This group is a safe place to talk to others who may have a similar diagnosis, treatment experience, to ask questions and get support from family members who are navigating the same support journey.
As for the practical and emotional challenges of supporting your mum and indeed yourself you may benefit from joining and posting in our general cancer……
……. support areas where you will connect with a wide range of members navigating the exact same support challenges.
To connect with a group click on the “Bold Links” I have created above …… then once the group page opens click in the [Black - Click to Join - Banner] that appears at the bottom of the page and this will then confirm that you have joined the group.
When you are ready……. you can introduce yourself by putting up your very own post by clicking [+ Create new post] or [+] in the top right of the group page.
You can copy and paste the text from this post into your new post.
It is an emotional time supporting family so you might find this Macmillan information your feelings when someone has cancer helpful as well as this link getting help with your emotions.
As always the Macmillan Support Line is open between 8am-8pm (timings may differ across services) 7 days a week on 0808 808 00 00…… this service provides cancer information, practical information, emotional support, benefits and financial guidance or just a listening ear.
Talking to people ‘face to face’ can be very helpful so do check to see if you have any Local Support in your area, do also check for a local Maggie's Centre as these folks are amazing.
Do get back to me if you need further help navigating the community.
Whatever cancer throws your way, we’re right there with you.
We’re here to provide physical, financial and emotional support.
