Hi, I am having surgery in under a week for breast cancer and also for auxiliary lymph nodes. I am getting very nervous and have been worrying a lot. I am very fortunate to have a wonderful partner but I don’t like to worry him more than necessary as I can see he is struggling with my diagnosis. Does anyone have any hints or tips on how to relax and stop myself from worrying all the time? Thank you

  • Hi   and a very warm welcome to the Macmillan Community but so sorry to hear about your diagnosis.

I know from experience having been on my cancer journey for over 26 years with two very rare, hard to treat types of Non Hodgkin’s Lymphomas (one incurable), Asbestosis and Prostate Cancer that navigating this journey can be such a stressful and challenging time but talking with and getting support from people who have walked or are walking the ‘exact same' journey can help a lot.

The Community is actually divided into dedicated Support Groups (Discussion Rooms)…… and I can see that you have already joined our dedicated……..

        Breast cancer

    …….. support group.

This group is a safe place to talk to others with a similar diagnosis, treatment experience, to ask questions and get support.

To connect in with the group please click on the link above……. then once the group page opens you can then introduce yourself to the group by putting up your very own post by clicking [+ Create new post] or [+] in the top right of the group page.

You can copy and paste the text from this post into your new post.

As always the Macmillan Support Line is open between 8am-8pm (timings may differ across services) 7 days a week on 0808 808 00 00…… this service provides cancer information, practical information, emotional support, benefits and financial guidance or just a listening ear.

Talking to people ‘face to face’ can be very helpful so do check to see if you have any Local Support in your area, do also check for a local Maggie's Centre as these folks are amazing.

Do get back to me if you need further help navigating the community.

  • Hi

Welcome to the MacMillan Community. I am sorry you have been diagnosed with breast cancer and (if I read correctly) you have some lymph node involvement. It’s absolutely normal to be anxious about surgery and to also be worried about the cancer itself. Treatment for breast cancer is very successful and there’s every likelihood it will be for you. It’s good you only have a few days to go to surgery as that will be a big milestone ticked off.

I can see you have joined the Breast cancer forum as suggested by  . I am one of the Community Champions across our various breast cancer forums and it’s a very welcoming and supportive community. You will find it’s quite a busy space with threads running on a number of topics. For example there’s a general discussion thread called “it seems I am a patient now”. If you are worrying and just want someone to chat to, that’s a great place to start.

It can also be helpful to put some brief information about your diagnosis and treatment plan in your biography (you can access this by clicking on your name). For example the type of breast cancer and the surgery you will be having.
