Hi everyone. I'm retired and live in East Yorkshire, so obviously you can't tell me much. If only!!

I am just over a week away from having my bladder and prostate removed to be replaced by a STOMA. Not much fun, but clearly better than the alternative. As part of managing the bag it has been suggested that I abandon my usual boxers and replacing them with something more supportive. Having looked at M&S their offering looks like it will cover half my abdomen.

Has anyone got other suggestions or advice please ? Even if I may continue with my boxers. I understand there is a cocealment element of the bag as well as comfort.

Thanks in anticipation

  • Hello ,

I'm retired and live in Tadcaster, I spent a lot of my childhood and youth in Barmston.

I don't have the same issues as you but do have a friend who had bladder cancer several years ago and wears a bag. He got used to it quite easily and hopefully you will do also.

It might be a good idea to also join the bladder and prostate forums for some more practical advice and I've placed links to these below if you wish to do so.

    All the best, Derek.

  • Hi

First of all, I hope your surgery goes smoothly for you when it comes round. I’ve had a different type of surgery and have had my bladder and rectum removed, so am a a “double bagger” for life. It’s amazing how quickly you get used to having any kind of stoma! My father in law had his bladder and prostate removed when he was 78 and manages very well nearly 3 years on.

As a woman, I don’t feel the need to wear different underwear from what I used to wear, but appreciate everyone is different. In addition to the groups suggested by Derek ( ) you may want to join our stoma support group which is here

We share lots of tips and advice for coping with a stoma, and you’d be welcome to ask us any questions there.

  • Thanks Sarah.

Very helpful. I will join STORMA support.

    All the best,

    Mike

  • Not everyone with bladder cancer ends up with a stoma, so it just widens the support you can get from those of us who have been there, done that and learned handy things along the way!
