Worried wife

Hi I'm Kerry and I am new here. I don't know where to start so I'll go from the beginning

My wife (36) has a tonsil that is larger than the other and frequently struggles with a sore throat and a form of tonsillitis. 2 years ago she had an MRI which came back clear and blood tests which also came back as ok. She was told to go for a biopsy and once she was there, the ENT specialist didn't think it was necessary, said to keep an eye on it and discharged her.

Flash forward to last year and my wife had a tooth extracted a particularly bad one, an ulcer appeared on her tongue, more like a flat patch which she thought was extaction related but it has never really gone away it shrinks and comes back then another sometimes appears on the other side. She has been tested for mouth thrush due to taking a Fostair inhaler and that came back negative.

We went to the doctors on Monday and he rang her back on Weds for her to be fast tracked for a biopsy of which we are waiting for. The only bit of light was that he said he thought it looked benign.

I suppose I just need to write it all down to make sense of the feelings. We have been here before as I had a breast biopsy a few years ago but of course it doesn't stop the worry and I am trying to be a strong person because that's my job. The anxiety of the unknown is hard.

Thank you for reading and I really hope those of you lovely people who have taken the time to read this have a happy weekend ahead.

  • Hi Kerry  and a very warm welcome to the Macmillan Community but I am so sorry to hear about the challenges you and your wife are dealing with.

The investigation and diagnosis period is hard work but getting support from people who have walked or are walking the ‘exact same' journey can help a lot.

The Community is actually divided into dedicated Support Groups (Discussion Rooms) and when it comes to the practical and emotional challenges of supporting your wife and indeed yourself you may benefit from joining and posting in our general cancer……

    Carers only

……. support group where you will connect with a wide range of members navigating the exact same support challenges.

To connect with a group click on the “Bold Links” I have created above …… then once the group page opens click in the [Black - Click to Join - Banner] that appears at the bottom of the page and this will then confirm that you have joined the group.

When you are ready……. you can introduce yourself by putting up your very own post by clicking [+ Create new post] or [+] in the top right of the group page.

You can copy and paste the text from this post into your new post.

It is an emotional time supporting family so you might find this Macmillan information your feelings when someone has cancer helpful as well as this link getting help with your emotions.

Once a clear diagnosis is made and if this turns out to be cancer…… do have a look through this link Cancer Specific Groups where you will find all our dedicated cancer type support groups listed.

As always the Macmillan Support Line is open between 8am-8pm (timings may differ across services) 7 days a week on 0808 808 00 00…… this service provides cancer information, practical information, emotional support, benefits and financial guidance or just a listening ear.

Talking to people ‘face to face’ can be very helpful so do check to see if you have any Local Support in your area, do also check for a local Maggie's Centre as these folks are amazing.

Do get back to me if you need further help navigating the community.
