I am new here, I'm in remission for 6 months from apml, I'm still terrified, is this normal or am I overacting  ?

  • Hi   and a warm welcome to the Community although I am sorry to see you joining us.

I am Mike and I help out around our various bLois cancer groups.

I don’t have Leukaemia but for some context I was first diagnosed way back in 1999 at 44 with a rare (8 in a million) incurable but treatable type of Skin (Cutaneous) T-Cell Lymphoma.

I eventually reached Stage 4a in late 2013 when a second, also rare (4 in a million) but aggressive Peripheral T-cell lymphoma not otherwise specified (PTCL-NOS) was then presenting so although my blood cancer is different I most definitely appreciate the challenges of this journey rather well.

I only ever achieved partial remission over my first 16 years….. the longest being 9 months before going back in treatment again……… but an Allogeneic (donor) Stem Cell Transplant in Oct 2015 put me into full remission and 10 years later that remission is holding……. I turn 70 next week and I am living a great life.

APL like my 2 Lymphomas is rare…. and seen to be a type of acute myeloid leukaemia (AML)……. also called APML or AML M3.

So you may want to join our dedicated……

    Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML)

……. support group where you will connect with others who are navigating or have navigated the Leukaemia journey.

I can totally understand you feeling terrified as in my early days I was the same. But I quickly came to understand the importance of living in the moment and deal with tomorrow when it comes…… and every time so relapsed a new plan was put in place.

Always around to chat on this post or in your post in the AML group.
