Hey guys.Wave

New to forum & new to the big scary world of cancer.

My partner was diagnosed a month ago with Acute Myeloid Lukimaia, having completed her first of four cycles of chemo her treatment plan has now changed & she requires a bone marrow/stem cell transplant.

Would be grateful if anyone who has been through this could give me some insight as to what to expect or point me in the right direction on the forum as tech is not my strong point, in fact I'm amazed I've managed this post..

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

I’m Anne, one of the Community Champions here on the Online Community, and although I've had different cancer diagnoses to your partner I know how difficult dealing with a cancer diagnosis can be.

The online community is divided into different support groups so I'm going to recommend a few for you to join. The first two are the acute myeloid leukaemia and the stem cell transplant groups as you'll then connect directly with others who have the same type of cancer as your partner and who are having or have had the same treatment.

The last group is the carers only group which is a supportive place to share your worries and emotions with others who are looking after someone living with cancer.

To join, just click on the links I've created and, once you've joined, you can start a new post in the same way as you did here and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.

It would be great if you could put something about your partner's diagnosis and proposed treatment into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

  • Hi  and a warm welcome to the Macmillan Community but so sorry to hear about your partners diagnosis.

I am Mike and I help out around our blood cancer groups.

I don’t have Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML) but for some context I was diagnosed way back in 1999 at 44 with a rare (8 in a million) incurable but treatable type of Cutaneous T-Cell Not Hodgkin’s Lymphoma ((NHL)

Eventually reaching Stage 4a in late 2013 when a second, also rare (4 in a million) type of aggressive Peripheral T-Cell NHL (a type of fast growing High-grade non-Hodgkin lymphoma) was then presenting so although my blood cancer ‘type’ is different I most definitely appreciate the challenges of this journey rather well.

More so as I have had 2 Allograft (Donor) Stem Cell Transplants (SCT) (June 2014 then in Oct 2015)…… but I am 9 years 9 months out from my last treatment, turn 70 at the end of the year and getting on with life…… this can be done.

A cancer diagnosis in the family like this can be such a challenging and stressful time but getting support from others who are dealing with the ‘exact same' support challenges can help you a lot.

The Community is actually divided into dedicated Support Groups (Discussion Rooms) so can I recommend you look to join and post in our dedicated……

Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML) support group.

    …..as well

as our general Stem Cell Transplant support group (this group covers all people from all the blood cancer going through SCT)

These groups are safe places to talk to others who may have a similar diagnosis, treatment experience, to ask questions and get support from family members who are navigating the same support journey.

To connect with a group click on the “Bold Italic Links” I have created above …… then once the group page opens click in the [Black - Click to Join - Banner] that appears at the bottom of the page and this will then confirm that you have joined the group.

When you are ready……. you can introduce yourself by putting up your very own post by clicking [+ Create new post] or [+] in the top right of the group page.

You can copy and paste the text from this post into your new post.

The Macmillan Support Line is open between 8am-8pm (timings may differ across services) 7 days a week on 0808 808 00 00…… this service provides cancer information, practical information, emotional support or just a listening ear.

I will keep an eye open for you in the groups.

  • About 6 weeks ago we discovered a lump in my wife's breast and quickly went to the doctor for examination and in the intervening weeks we have been into numerous hospitals for numerous scans and test (and biopsy's "brutal but nessesary") culminating in a first cycle of treatment yesterday, chemo therapy and imuno therapy.

It has been an absolute roller coaster ride for me and equally for my wife, what I knew about breast cancer before you could write on a postage stamp but the amount of information coming our way is mind blowing.

I came here to get some support ask daft questions  and check I wasn't loosing my mind, the stress on our relationship has been enormous being asked question about things you cant answer late into the night doesn't help either, I think saying my wife is terrified is a slight under statement. All help and advice will be gratefully received

  • Hi  as you see from the posts the Community is divided into dedicated Support Groups so can I recommend you look to join and post in our…….

       Breast cancer

……. support group and as for the practical and emotional challenges of supporting your wife and indeed yourself you may benefit from joining and posting in our……

      Carers only

……. support groups where you will connect with a wide range of members navigating the exact same support challenges.

  • Hi Anne.

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply, and thank you for the profile tips & pointing me in the right direction.

  • Thanks very much Mike, very helpful, your journey tho tough, is very inspirational.

Strange how those astronomical odds always work against you when it comes to bad luck, yet you have no chance with same astronomical odds in having good luck & winning something like the lottery.

Thanks again for info & help.
