My husband (87) has a recurring BCC and our local hospital referred him for MOHS. It didn't sound nice but sounded the best way forward. When we saw the consultant he spent all his time trying to persuade my husband that it wouldn't be in his best interest. "Realistically how long have you got?!" OK, the BCC is slow-growing, but how slow is that? He is a very active 87-year-old. A lot was made of his quality of life, of the fact that there would be a large hole beside his eye (where the BCC is) that healing would be slower than usual because of previous radiotherapy, that he would have a lot of scarring and his appearance would change. All of which is probably true, I suppose. We have been left very confused and not knowing what decision to make. Has anyone else been faced with a similar decision, and how did you decide in the end? I am new to this community and would really appreciate hearing anyone else's experiences.
Hi Sandy and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.
I’m Anne, one of the Community Champions here on the Online Community, and I have a BCC removed in the past. However, mine was done by simple surgery so I don't have any recommendations either way about Mohs surgery.
The online community is divided into different support groups so I'm going to recommend that you join us over in the skin cancer group, which is a great place to ask questions, share experiences and get support.
To join, just click on the link I've created and, once you've joined, you can start a new post in the same way as you did here and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.
It would be great if you could put something about your husband's diagnosis and proposed treatment into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
Whatever cancer throws your way, we’re right there with you.
We’re here to provide physical, financial and emotional support.
