Hi,
I have never reached out to anything like this before so unsure where to go My dad has been suffering with bowel cancer over 2 years and Monday he was told it was incurable and that the cancer had advanced to peritoneal metastasis. My dad has always been someone who has never been ill and I'm terrified by the next stage and how best to support him. its odd as when I am with him and my mum I hold it all together but struggling when I'm on my own to point of constant tears and looking through the Internet for ways to save him although know that it isn't possible. I just can't imagine life without him.
Hi Nat90 and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.
I’m sorry to read that you've recently discovered that your dad's bowel cancer has spread and that he's no longer curable. It's natural to feel as you do but hopefully I can point you in the direction of a couple of groups to get support.
The first is the bowel cancer group, which will give you the chance to ask questions and share experiences to do with your dad's cancer and treatment, and the second is the supporting someone with incurable cancer group where you can discuss your emotions along with the best way to support your dad.
To join, just click on the links I've created and, once you've joined, you can start a new post in the same way as you did here and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.
When you feel up to it, it would be helpful if you could put something about your dad's diagnosis and treatment into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
Don't lose hope ️
My story is exactly the same, firstly diagnosed with Stage 3 bowel cancer 2 years ago, given the all clear then 4 weeks later it was discovered in my peritoneam and classed as incurable.
I've since gone on to have 8 rounds of chemo and then accepted for Cytoreductive surgery and Hipec which I've had in January. This wasn't offered as a option as first or even mentioned until they could see how I responded to treatment. Chemo kept it stable so was able to go on and be put forward to have surgery.
Now awaiting on Scan results to see if they managed to cut it all away successfully
Can't be cured but could buy me an extra 5 years, possibly more. Any extra time I can get with my children I'll take.
It's such a shock that you can never be prepared for but once it settles in a little, keep pushing forward with hope and positivity and throw everything at it. It's what intend to do.
Whatever cancer throws your way, we’re right there with you.
We’re here to provide physical, financial and emotional support.
