Supporting my dad

Hi everyone I’m new here. Really struggling at the minute and didn’t know where else to turn. My dad has primary bowel cancer which was resected in 2016 and he had chemo for it- over the years since then he’s had both lungs and liver. At the start of the year he was told it had spread and there was no further surgical input - I think the oncologist basically said ‘it’s everywhere’. Over the past month my dad has declined massively - they have started him on modified release morphine which is making him confused, he looks terrible today when I went round with my daughter who’s 13 - I had to hold back from crying. I’ve hopefully joined here to charge experiences with others who are supporting family members.

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

I'm sorry to read about your dad and it's natural for you to be feeling as you do.

As the online community is divided into different support forums I'm going to recommend that you join the supporting someone with incurable cancer forum as you'll then connect directly with others who are supporting people with an incurable diagnosis.

To join, just click on the link I've created and, once you've joined, you can start a new post in the same way as you did here and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.

It would be great if you could put something about your dad's diagnosis and treatment into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

  • Thank you so much for the welcome I sat and cried whilst reading it - which I think was needed
