My mum has just been diagnosed with bowel cancer but due to ot her healthy issues they aren't going to treat it, we haven't been told what stage it's or how long she has left, Since finding out about the cancer no one has been to see her. She now has free flowing diarrhea and still the drs are reluctant to do a home visit , she can't get to the surgery as she is bed bound due to being so weak. Is this what her life has come to, she is nearly 78 years old and been pushed to the side by our GP.

We don't even know if it's bowel or colon cancer.

  • Hi  and welcome to the Macmillan Community but so sorry to hear about your mum's diagnosis and the challenges you are all dealing with..... a cancer diagnosis like this in the family can be such a challenging and stressful time but getting support from others who are dealing with the ‘exact same' support challenges can help you a lot.....

I have a long term incurable cancer so my circumstances are different.... but when i am having problems like your mum..... my wife gets her pointy elbows into the system and sits on every phone number she can find...... to get answers and support..... and she does not accept being fobbed off........ I suggest you do the same.

The New to Community is like our reception desk where we try to direct you to the best part of the Community for you to get support. The Community is actually divided into dedicated Support Groups (Discussion Rooms) and when it comes to the practical and emotional challenges of supporting your mum and indeed yourself you may benefit from joining and posting in our

We also have our Ask an Expert section but do allow 3 working days for a reply.

Talking to people face to face can be very helpful so do check to see if you have any Local Macmillan Support in your area, do also check for a local Maggie's Centre as these folks are amazing and support all the family.

Please do get back to me if you need further help navigating the community ((hugs))
