Shock breast cancer diagnosis

I went to my GP on 22nd December as I noticed skin was puckered and hard cord/rope going through my left breast. It was a 4 week wait for a mammogram and ultra sound appointment. My surgeon requested a MRI with contrast as the mammogram and ultra sound results showed no evidence of anything untoward.

I received a call the next morning for the MRI appointment in 4 days time. I have an App I use for my local hospital which sends you your appointments and after visit summary's etc. I received a message for a recall appointment to have a Tomosythesis scan(3D mammogram) and an ultra sound on my right breast??

I went into a complete meltdown as no one had spoken to me and it was for my right breast. The MRI had picked up a hidden tumour, a biopsy was taken and I received the news on the 22nd February that I have grade 2 breast cancer.

I had a lumpectomy and senitel lymph nodes removed on 15th March. I thank my surgeon for his thoroughness by sending me for the MRI if I hadn't, it would be a different story.

I have been advised that moving forward any mammogram will be accompanied with an MRI as standard.

I am now in that waiting game and due to get results of staging and next treatment. Its HER-2 so I will also have medication for the next 5 years.

I'm concerned today as the incision under my armpit has a lump and it looks like a white head spot ? my breast also feels like there could be fluid on the outer side ?

Has anyone experienced fluid etc as I don't know if it is or if I'm over paranoid. I live on my own and I am being brave by using this forum to ask.

Many thanks in advance

  • Hi …….. and a very warm welcome to the Community but sorry to hear about your journey to date.

Navigating the cancer journey can be such a stressful and challenging time but getting support from people who have walked the ‘exact same' cancer journey can help a lot. (I have a completely different cancer).

The New to Community is like our reception desk where we look to direct you to the best part of the Community for you to get support. The Community is divided into dedicated Cancer Support Groups (Discussion Rooms) so can I recommend you join and post in our dedicated Breast Cancer support group. This is a safe place to talk to others with a similar diagnosis, treatment experience, to ask questions and get support.

To connect in with the group click on this link Point down

    Breast cancer

…… then once the group page opens click on “Click to Join” when the black banner appears or “Join” under “Group Tools” (this all depends on the device you are using)

When you are ready you can introduce yourself by clicking “+new” or “+” in the top right next to the group title. You can copy and paste the text from this post into your new post.

You may find it helpful to call the Macmillan Support Line open 8am-8pm (timings may differ across services) 7 days a week on 0808 808 00 00. This service provides cancer information, practical information, emotional support, benefits/financial guidance or just a listening ear. We also have our Ask an Expert section but do allow 3 working days for a reply.

Talking to people face to face can be very helpful so do check to see if you have any Local Macmillan Support in your area, do also check for a local Maggie's Centre as these folks are amazing and give support to all the family.

Do get back to me if you need further help navigating the community.
