Don’t know if this is the right place, my wife has just been diagnosed with cancer of the womb as she awaits treatment we have all sorts of questions

one the doctors can’t answer is

we booked 4 holidays for this year, both just retired, if we have to cancel do we use the travel insurance that was in place when we actually booked the trips or do I have to renew for this year (due in February, first trip in March)  ?

sorry if it sounds trivial and confusing

thanks

  • Hi. If you had annual travel insurance in place when you booked and had no idea of possible health problems then I would think that’s  the one you will claim from.

When we first learned I might have lung cancer in May last year we were just about to go on the first of three holidays. Missed first one because I was having all the scans etc. I contacted insurers immediately and told them we were claiming for that holiday. Also informed them that should the diagnosis be confirmed then we would probably have to cancel the next two and to make sure they kept this info on file. As each trip was cancelled I made an extra claim and sent supporting documents.

They paid out on everything booked and paid for before we knew about my cancer. This included a trip that came after the policy had run out but had been booked during it.

All policies say to get in touch as soon as you know you might have a claim so I would do that if I were you.

hope that helps. There’s also a travel forum on here that might be useful.

  • That’s brilliant thanks, I’ll definitely do that. It is an annual policy

  • Hi. Just to add.. make sure you put everything in writing in an email so there is no “confusion” later.

Really hope you and your wife still get to go on some of the holidays.

  • Does anyone know of an insurance company that will cover someone with a terminal dianosis?

  • Hi  a holiday sounds amazing but you find getting affordable Travel Insurance can be a challenge and at times the price quoted could be higher than the cost of the holiday and some people do find that no Insurance is being offered.

I had to be 2 years in remission from my type of blood cancer before I could get any price but these decisions are often all down to cancer types, treatment, prognosis and the resulting risk factor put on by the insurers risk assessment - I am very open to serious infections due to a reduced immune system so this is seen as a high risk factor for insurers.

Comparison sites tend to use the same algorithms so getting a clear price can be difficult and it’s not that unusual to be turned down or told to call the insurers.

It is actually more effective to call a few insurers directly as this means that you have answered all the questions correctly and in doing this a suitable policy can be offered and price given.

Full disclosure is always advisable as in the event of you developing any issues this can reduce the risk of an insurance companies wriggling out from paying out.

I am not allowed to recommend any companies but do have a look through the Recommended Travel Insurance in our Travel insurance group as it's where the majority of recommendations from other forum members are.

You can also look through all the individual members of posts in the group as well.

I do hope you can get cover.
