Just been diagnosed with laryngeal / glottis cancer on Friday and it’s a huge shock as I only became symptomatic in any way a month ago. I have an appointment on Friday to discuss treatment options. normally I would talk to my wife but I can’t even bring myself to talk to her as a week ago she lost her close aunt unexpectedly and is in pieces about it. I’m unable to turn to anyone, i thought I’d tough it out but now the realisation is hitting me I’m just wobbling. Sorry, I’m just venting it here.

  • Hi   and a very warm welcome to the Community but sorry to hear about your diagnoses.

Navigating the cancer journey can be such a stressful and challenging time but getting support from people who have walked the ‘exact same' cancer journey can help a lot. (I have a completely different cancer).

The New to Community is like our reception desk where we look to direct you to the best part of the Community for you to get support. The Community is divided into dedicated Cancer Support Groups (Discussion Rooms) so can I recommend you join and post in our dedicated Larynx Cancer support group. This is a safe place to talk to others with a similar diagnosis, treatment experience, to ask questions and get support.

To connect in with the group click on this link> Larynx cancer then once the group page opens click on “Click to Join” when the black banner appears or “Join” under “Group Tools” (this all depends on the device you are using)

When you are ready you can introduce yourself by clicking “+new” or “+” in the top right next to the group title. You can copy and paste the text from this post into your new post.

The Macmillan Support Line is open 8am-8pm (timings may differ across services) 7 days a week on 0808 808 00 00. This service provides cancer information, practical information, emotional support, benefits/financial guidance or just a listening ear.

We also have our Ask an Expert section but do allow a few working days for a reply.

Talking to people face to face can be very helpful so do check to see if you have any Local Macmillan Support in your area, do also check for a local Maggie's Centre as these folks are amazing and give support to all the family.

Do get back to me if you need further help navigating the community.

  • Hi. I'm very new to this site but I do know someone who had the very same thing as you. He's now 87 yrs old (he was in his 70's at the time of diagnosis) and still with us. He has had an operation and chemo but the worst he has now is the portion size he can eat at mealtimes.  Because of the rerouting they do, he suffers with acid so has found small portions are the key but he's very active for his age and always ready for a fight albeit a verbal one these days.

  • Hi  and a warm welcome to you also.

I was reading your post to our nurse team in our Expert Section and I am sorry to hear about your ex-Father in Law (do allow a few working days for a reply.

You don’t say what type of cancer your ex-Father in Law has but if you care to have a look through THIS LIST you will find all our many dedicated cancer support groups listed. It’s important to get the right group as not all cancers react the same way.

As for the practical and emotional challenges of supporting your ex-Father in Law you may benefit from joining and posting in our Family and Friends and Supporting someone with incurable cancer support group where you will connect with others navigating the same support challenges.

Our Support Line teams are available 7 days a week, 8am-8pm on freephone 0808 808 00 00where you will find one of team there to help you out. We also have our
