Stem cell transplant, what has been your experience?

Hi, my husband was diagnosed with multiple myeloma December 2022. He is 69 and had a rocky few months with a few hospital admissions. He also experienced an episode of delirium lasting about 6 days.
He is due to go for stem cell harvesting next week and then transplant approximately 4-6 week’s later.
We would like to understand the process whilst he is receiving his transplant. We would appreciate anyone sharing their experience of undergoing a stem cell transplant, the good, the bad and the ugly parts of the process. We feel a little lost at the moment.
thanks

  • Hi  and welcome to the Online Community.

Navigating the Stem Cell Transplant (SCT) journey can be such a stressful and challenging time but getting support from others who have been on the ‘exact same' journey can help a lot.

I don’t have Myeloma but I have had 2 Allo (donor) SCTs for my incurable Non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

As you see the Community is actually divided into dedicated Support Groups (Discussion Rooms) and I can see that you have already joined our dedicated Myeloma support group.

But we do also have a dedicated Stem cell transplant group.

This group is a safe place to talk to others who have navigated the SCT process both as patients and family, to ask questions and get support.

My first Allo SCT was in June 2014 but it failed by Dec 2014 but this did not come as a surprise as we were using a new process specifically for my type of blood cancer. I had my second Allo SCT in Oct 2015 and remission was achieved in Sep 2016 and I remain in remission to this day, turned 67 last Nov and am living a great life.

Over the years I have talked with folks in their mid to late 70s who have successfully been through the SCT process and are getting on with life so your husbands age is well within the age range for the SCT process.

Do join the SCT group, have a look at the various posts, you can look at group members stories bu hitting their community names (not everyone will have put up their story) and do introduce yourself but starting your own discussion thread in the group by clicking “+new” or “+” in the top right next to the group title.

You can copy and paste the text from this post into your new post.

I am driving up from the South back home to Inverness today but will try and keep my eye open for you in the SCT group.

The SCT process can be challenging but it is do-able ((hugs))

  • Thanks Highlander. It’s an anxiety provoking time, that’s for sure. Thanks for the advice re the other chat area.
    safe journey back home.

  • Yes it’s an anxious time but do look at the SCT process more as a life ‘giving’ opportunity…… for me, I would not be here today without SCT ((hugs))

  • Hi again  I see that you have joined the Stem cell transplant group…… do consider putting up a post in the group and introduce yourself to the group as you will get lots of specific support. The more you understand the SCT process the less stressful the journey may be.
