Hi I’m hoping someone can help me my husband finished his radiotherapy yesterday how soon can we go abroad?

  • Hi  and welcome to the Macmillan Online Community. A post treatment holiday sounds great but Radiotherapy can be rather different depending on the type of cancer and the intensity of the treatment.

I had 45 radiotherapy zaps over my 2 years treatment for Non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. One set of 10 zaps in the middle of my treatment were to all my Lymph-nodes on my body so my immune system was severely effected to the point that I was very open to infections for over 16 months post treatment and even if I wanted to go abroad my consultant advised me not to go but also I would have not got travel insurance anyway.

So actually the best people to advise you would be his clinical team. Once I was in the position 3 years post treatment to to be able to go abroad Travel Insurance companies required a ‘fit to travel’ letter from my consultant.

As for travel insurance you may want to have a look through the 'recommended travel insurancethread in our Travel insurance group as it's where the majority of recommendations from other forum members are. Clicking on the link I've created will take you straight there. You might also want to look at this thread as it includes a link to a Travel Insurance Directory.

I do hope you can get this arranged soon.

Hi thank you for getting back to me he has soft tissue sarcoma in his back he’s had the lump removed a and just finished his radiation he’s had 30 days of radiotherapy

  • I just noticed you had joined our Soft tissue sarcomas group - you could put your question  up in this group as well.

It is important to get a clear clarification from his team about going abroad. When it comes to insurance the best results on finding travel insurance is by calling the companies directly as the comparison sites tend not to give the best results.

My radiotherapy has put me very high up the list to develop skin cancer so I have to be very very carful in the sun for life now….. but this has not stopped us from going abroad.

All the best in your search for clear answers and I do hope you get that holiday soon.
