Happy to join the group. I am an African with Multiple myeloma diagnosed 2yrs ago. Had chemotherapy & stem cell treatment at Oxford as a private patient. I did tolerate all my medications without much problem. I am in remission.

Is there any support for foreigners in UK?

Financial, psychological and physical support as it’s very expensive to go through the unending treatment I am going through as MM is not curable but treatable as my consultant told me.

It is also very lonely being away from family and this disease makes me change my outlook to life.

What is next to do in life comes to my mind regularly!

I do not smoke or drink & did play golf 2ce a week before now, eat healthy foods, drink water, walking for 1hr daily etc, but where did I get MM from?
My treatment in UK gave me the golden opportunity to still be alive today but how long can I afford this for,  medical expertise, tools & support isn’t available in my country!

 Thanks

  • Hi  and welcome to the Online Community.

I am so sorry to read about the challenges you are facing after your Stem Cell Transplant, I understand this well as I have had two Allo (donor) Stem Cell Transplants for my rare type of incurable Non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

The New to Community is like the Community Reception area and as there are many cancer types and experiences so likewise the Community has many support groups so can I recommend you start by joining our supportive Stem cell transplant and Myeloma groups as these will be good places for you to connect with other folks who may be on the same pathway.

Navigating the community will depend on the device you are using. To join a group just click on the green link above then scroll down and choose 'click to join' or 'join' on the page that opens.

You can then introduce yourself by putting up a post by clicking  on ‘New Thread’ or ‘New here, say hello’ then hit the box with the X on the top right (phones).

You could just copy and paste the text from this your first post and you can also join in with existing ‘Discussions’ by clicking on 'reply'.

It’s always good to talk so do call the Macmillan Support Services on 0808 808 00 00 - most services are open 8am to 8pm, 7 days a week Clicking here to see what is available. This service provides lots of cancer information, support, financial guidance or just a listening ear.

Talking to people face to face can indeed help a lot but during these strange times it’s not that available but do check to see if you have any Local Macmillan Support in your area has opened up. Do also check out for a local Maggie’s Centre as these folks are amazing. During lockdown a lot of their services moved onto online video support. But I see our local Maggie’s (Inverness) are starting to open up for one on one support.

I will keep an eye open for you in the Stem Cell Transplant group where I will do my best to support you.

    All the very best ((hugs))
