My very best friend and rock who has steered me through many a crisis (and I reciprocated a few times) has just learned with no warning that he has cancer in his lungs, around kidney, spine, bones and brain and goodness knows where else. We realise it will be weeks at best and he’s not to make his highly anticipated 50th birthday. I’m trying to make everything as wonderful as possible for him but this is all so new and I don’t want to blunder around making him feel guilty for leaving me - by being accidentally maudlin or not giving him the right support. I’m so happy to have logged in here to just type something. Thank you for being here and bear with me while I find my bearings.
Hi and welcome to the Online Community but so sorry to hear about your friends diagnosis.
A cancer diagnosis like this can be very challenging but it great that you want to do the best for him. When it comes to the practical challenges of supporting someone you may benefit from talking with others caring for family and friends so do check out our Supporting someone with incurable cancer and Family and friends groups where you will connect with others supporting family and friends during this very difficult time.
To join a group just click on the link above then choose 'click to join' or 'join' (depending on the device you're using) on the page that opens.
You can then introduce yourself by putting up a ‘New Thread’ or hit the box with the X on the top right (phones), you could just copy and paste the text from this your first post. You can also join in with existing ‘Discussions’ by clicking on 'reply'.
It’s always good to talk so do call the Macmillan Support Services on 0808 808 00 00 - most services are open 8am to 8pm, 7 days a week Clicking here to see what is available. This service provides lots of cancer information, support, financial guidance or just a listening ear.
We also have Cancer Nurse Team in our Ask an Expert section, but do allow two working days for replies from our expert team.
All the very best ((hugs))
Thank you. This is marvellously helpful as my brain is in shock mode.
I can totally understand this as there is a battle between the ears kicks off when cancer comes into our lives regardless of if it’s you or someone you love.
Do connect in with the groups as these folks are walking this walk ((hugs))
Whatever cancer throws your way, we’re right there with you.
We’re here to provide physical, financial and emotional support.
