Hi I’m new to this group. My dad has just completed six months of chemo and radio treatment and has dealt with it so well living alone and during lockdown it’s made it more tough.

Dad has lost muscle strength which he will hopefully regain but for now he struggles to stand up from the sofa. Is there somewhere we can loan a rise and recline chair or or does anyone have any recommendations where to buy a secondhand chair – was rather hoping There maybe a Facebook or support page of listings for items that have helped others.  Failing that I’m left with the usual eBay listings which I would prefer to not use as I would preferTo donate money to Macmillan if there is such a thing as to offset against the loan of a chair.

Thank you

  • Hi and welcome to the online community

I'm glad to hear that your dad has dealt with his recent chemotherapy treatment well but I do agree that the lockdown has made life more difficult for everyone.

As the online community is divided up into different support groups I'm going to recommend that you join the family and friends group which will give you the opportunity of connecting with other people who have a family member living with cancer and someone may have knowledge of where to buy a second hand recliner from other then eBay.

To join just click on the links I've created and then choose 'click to join' or 'join' (depending on the device you're using) on the page that opens. You can then introduce yourself and post in the same way as you did here and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.

It would be great if you could pop something about your dad's journey so far into your profile as it really helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar diagnosis. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

If you have any difficulty navigating the community just drop me a reply and I'll be pleased to help.

  • Hi  and second welcome to the Community. Good to hear your dad got through his treatment but the treatment left overs can be a problem.

I remember well leaving hospital in a wheelchair and the 4 months physiotherapy to get me back on my feet.

All my needs (not a rise and fall chair) were put in place by the hospital through the health board in home support team so do talk with his hospital or his GP.

You may want to call the Macmillan Support Services on 0808 808 00 00 - most services are open 8am to 8pm, 7 days a week Clicking here to see what is available. This service can give lots of cancer information, support, financial guidance or just a listening ear.

We also have our Ask an Expert section, but do allow two working days for replies from our expert team.
