My mum was supposed to have a major operation today to remove the ovaries, a full hysterectomy, spleen, part of the bowel and the Omentum. She was diagnosed in Nov stage 3c and has responded well to 4 chemo sessions. Last minute just as my mum was getting wheeled down to theatre, they decided to cancel due to their being no beds available in the high dependency unit. After a night of making myself ill with stress and anxiety the shock of this news today has made these feelings even worse and I most admit I have never felt this way. The op will be rescheduled soon I hope but to build up after 7 months and to be told it’s candelled, my poor mum. I hadn’t realised how I would feel on the day of the surgery and it brings the severe stress and anxiety back to when she was diagnosed. I’m a very level headed person, good job, out walking the dog regularly and teach yoga now and again but if anyone has any coping methods after what has been an incredibly distressing day I would be most grateful.

Hi and warm welcome to the Macmillan Online Community but sorry that you had to find us and especially sorry to hear about your mum’s diagnosis and the cancellation of her operation. Unfortunately it’s happening a lot at the moment but this is no consolation.
A cancer diagnosis in the family can be challenging in so many ways and as I was the one with cancer you find talking with others who are walking the same type of cancer support journey as this can help you navigate this difficult time.
The Community is organised into support groups so can I recommend you join our supportive Ovarian cancer group, this will be a good place to connect with patients and families navigating the same type of cancer journey.
To join a group just click on the link above then choose 'click to join' or 'join' (depending on the device you're using) on the page that opens.
You can then introduce yourself by putting up a ‘New Thread’ or hit the box with the X on the top right (phones), you could just copy and paste the text from this your first post. You can also join in with existing ‘Discussions’ by clicking on 'reply'.
When it comes to the practical challenges of supporting someone you may benefit from talking with others caring for family and friends so do check out our Carers only group as you will connect with others supporting family and friends through their cancer journey.
It’s always good to talk so do call the Macmillan Support Services on 0808 808 00 00 - most services are open 8am to 8pm, 7 days a week Clicking here to see what is available. This service can give lots of cancer information, support, financial guidance or just a listening ear. We also have Cancer Nurse Team in our Ask an Expert section, but do allow two working days for replies from our expert team.
((hugs))
