Just had a call after prostate biopsy to say i have prostate cancer.

Just dont know where to start  i am 58, normaly healthy no major health issues, only found out it was an issue after scan for kiidney stones last November,  two blood tests in January showed  PSA of 6 then 5.8, hence the biopsy.

Anyone had similar experience, what is the prognosis?

Can you be cured? Can  you live for many more years?

I have two young boys  1

3 and 18, worried about them  mortgage etc.

I am sure everyone says, why me!

  • Hi . Can I offer you a warm welcome to the Macmillan Online Community. I’m sorry to read about your diagnosis but I’m glad you’ve found us. Obviously I have a different cancer but a cancer diagnosis of any kind makes us ask lots of questions, causes confusion, stress and probably emotions we’ve never experienced before. To be able to talk to other people who are in the same situation will help you get through this.

The Macmillan Community is organised into dedicated support hubs.  I would suggest you join our Prostate cancer  group, this will be a good place to meet up with others making the same type of cancer journey.

I can add though my husband was diagnosed with Prostate cancer in 2013 following blood tests showing his PSA was increasing. (It increased from 5.6 to 11.2) As his cancer was contained within the prostate he had Brachytherapy followed by 3 weeks of external radiotherapy. He had blood tests every 6 months and in 2018 was discharged from his Oncologist back to his GP . He continues to have blood tests every 6 months and his last one was 0.19

It’s always helpful to others if you write a little something (or a lot) about yourself and your journey to date. You can enter it into your profile (click on your username and select “Profile”) It’s helpful to other members with a similar diagnosis who can then hopefully answer your questions. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. You can amend or update it at any time.

The Macmillan Support Services also provide lots of information, support, financial guidance or just someone to listen.

Most services are open 8am to 8pm, 7 days a week and it's free to call on 0808 808 00 00 have a look by Clicking here to see what is available and we also have our Ask an Expert section, but do allow two working days for replies from our expert team.

Sending you welcoming hugs B xx

Thank you for the  welcome , advice and reassurance, the first few days after diagnosis must be difficult  to deal with.

  • You're very welcome. I veered between numbness, disbelief and hysteria. It will get easier I promise you.

I forgot to mention, when you join the Prostate cancer, just copy and paste this, your first post by way of introduction.

    Hugs, B x
