Hi folks,

this is me, nearly 50, strawberry blonde/ African sunset hair colour, married with 2 kids, regularly exercise and I’ve  just had a melanoma removed from my right leg, it was the size of a 20p and 1.1mm thick. I am due to have a consultation with the plastic surgeon next Tuesday prior to my op. Which will include a skin graft and biopsy on my lymph nodes.

Who would have thought it would happen to me, but then again when I started donating to Macmillan’s years ago, I thought am I cursing myself!!!Joy

Anyway, I am here to read about any advice you want to throw at me, or share your stories similar or not.

I am a serving Police Officer and have seen and been to the worst crime scenes you can imagine. I will take any advice in anyway you want to put it. I will not be offended.

  • Hi  and warm welcome to the Macmillan Online Community although sorry that you had to find us and especially sorry to hear about your diagnosis.

A cancer diagnosis can be challenging in so many ways but talking with others who are walking the same type of cancer treatment journey will help you navigate this difficult time.

The Community is organised into cancer specific support groups so can I recommend you join our supportive Melanoma group as this will be a good place to connect with patients and families navigating the same type of cancer treatment journey.

To join a group just click on the link above then choose 'click to join' or 'join' (depending on the device you're using) on the page that opens.

You can then introduce yourself by putting up a ‘New Thread’ or hit the box with the X on the top right (phones), you could just copy and paste the text from this your first post. You can also join in with existing ‘Discussions’ by clicking on 'reply'.

It’s always good to talk so do call the Macmillan Support Services on 0808 808 00 00 - most services are open 8am to 8pm, 7 days a week Clicking here to see what is available. This service can give lots of information, support, financial guidance or just a listening ear. We also have our Ask an Expert section, but do allow two working days for replies from our expert team.

To find information covering diagnosis, treatments and pages covering most types of cancers can be found on our Online Information and Support Section.

    ((hugs))

Hi, I’m 56, 7 children... I’ve gone to many hardships in life. While my messages are similar, I am reaching out to people who are distressed, like me. I understand how you feel, in my case, it’s my no. 5 son.

If you need to talk I’m here. It’s always good to be there for one another. Try keeping calm, starting from avoiding focusing on the things that are going wrong, with the few that are still right. For love Heartbeat

My suggestion is to research on each subject related to your particular condition. Everyone is different.

Listen to as many Lectures/testimonials as possible and make sure your conclusions are based from real people’s accounts.

Take in consideration your individual physical strength and overall health as well your mental ability to feel what’s best for you by intuition.

Remember that your mind is the boss
    Your body it’s employee.Wink

  • Hi and a second welcome to the online community

Like you, I was diagnosed with melanoma and never thought it would happen to me being dark haired and tanning easily.

Please do as my friend Thehighlander has suggested and join us over in the melanoma group as you'll then be able to connect with others, me included, who understand what you're going through. I've had both the wide local excision (WLE) and sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) that you'll be having shortly so I'm happy to answer any questions you might have.

When you have a minute it would be great if you could pop something about your journey so far into your profile as it really helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar diagnosis. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

I'll keep an eye out for you in the group.
